Now Trending: JMU Graduation Caps of 2012

5/1/2012

It’s almost here — graduation. We’ve experienced some of the best times of our lives here at JMU… the ECL Rave… Snowpocalypse ‘10… the 21-16 victory over Virginia Tech… and countless others. (Come on. We saw Spring Fest ’10, and we lived to tell about it.)

JMU is a place where many of us learned a lot about ourselves and a ton about others. We’ve met the friends of a lifetime. We’ve encountered some of the most influential professors who pushed us to challenge ourselves. Plus, we’ve had tons of fun.

But I digress... There is only so much procrastination during finals week you can do!

Something many graduating collegiettes haven’t thought about yet is designing their mortarboards or graduation caps. Over the past week, I’ve seen some of my friends post some creative cap ideas online. Here are three ideas from fellow JMU collegiettes:

1. Get creative! Add a personal touch that screams something about your personality and interests.

Whose cap? Meaghan O’Toole
Major: Communication Studies with a Public Relations Concentration

Favorite memory at JMU: “I don't think there's one memory that I could isolate as my favorite.
I think above all I'm going to miss the special level of hospitality that JMU has. The genuine kindness of every student and professor here is impossible to overlook. The atmosphere is absolutely my favorite part of JMU, which underlies every other memory that I've made here.”

Christine's Downtown Harrisonburg Favorites in 3 Minutes!

4/17/2012

Hey JMU Collegiettes! Do you have some free time from classes and schoolwork for a change? Now is the time to "do downtown." Harrisonburg's Historic Downtown is a great to grab a bite, get a drink

with friends or go for a stroll. It's a straight shot from campus on South Main Street, so downtown is a perfect place to venture if you're stuck on campus without a car!

Rock the Peplum: Four Ways to Wear the Trend

4/4/2012

Hello collegiettes! Now that we are officially in the spring season, it’s time for spring fashion trends! Among the other warm-weather trends such as floral patterns, tangerine tones and color-blocking brights, peplum is one of my fashion picks. A peplum is a light (or extreme) ruffle at the waistline. It was a 1950s and 1980s hit as well. Do we see the trend here?

Your favorite celebrities like Blake Lively, Kate Middleton and Jennifer Hudson rock this trend, and you can too! Reese Witherspoon looked classically gorgeous in UK Glamour in a Ja

son Wu peplum. The same pink & white peplum is seen on the runway in Anjerika’s spring 2012 trends article (I love the white houndstooth).

Why Peplum?
Peplum accentuates the bust area (mrow!) and plays up the hips when worn correctly. It covers up your mid-section which, let’s face it, is a problem area for many college-aged women (another pitcher anyone?).

If you’re concerned about shaping up for the summer, read Brittany’s article. You won’t be alone in your progress!

Favorite App: Instagram

3/28/2012

Before I got an iPhone 4S a few weeks ago, one of the apps I couldn't wait for was Instagram. Not only does this app with over 27 million users allow you to edit pictures with different filters and frames, but it has its own exclusive social network. Plus, Apple voted Instagram the 2011 "App of the Year" which makes it something worth downloading on your smartphones and tablets! Want to know the best part? It’s FREE!

Instagram is currently compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. However, Android users have some great news: TechCrunch announced Sunday that Android phones will soon gain access to the app as well.

4 Ways for You to Reduce Your Ecological Footprint!

2/16/2012

You don’t need to hug trees or be an environmentalist to make a positive impact on the world around us. JMU makes it incredibly easy to recycle on campus. There are several small ways to do your part while keeping some extra cash in your pocket and saving energy...

1.    Use fluorescent light bulbs.
Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use way less electricity than normal light bulbs. These energy efficient light bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than your standard incandescent light bulb. National Geographic has a Light Bulb Savings Calculator. Simply put in how many light bulbs you have in your room, entire apartment or house to calculate your energy impact. The results show how much energy you’re saving in addition to other national energy efficiency statistics.

You know the long overhead fluorescent lights JMU uses in dorms and school buildings? Compact fluorescents are the smaller version of those.  Although these light bulbs may be a few dollars more expensive than other options, they save money in the long run by downsizing your electric bill and outliving other bulbs. Now that’s a bright idea!

Let’s Go: JMU’s Hidden Gem for Healthy Eating

1/30/2012

Hey collegiettes™! In one of our open HC polls, we asked about your New Year’s Resolutions.  We at Her Campus JMU have your resolutions down to a science!

So far:
·      38% want to be up in the gym (workin’ on their fitness)
·      25% wish to spend more time with friends and family
·      25% strive for a 4.0 this semester
·      13% want to kick a bad habit

Last week, Brittany Kinsella wrote a nutrition article on keeping your diet resolution. This week, we’re going to tell you where you can make those beneficial meal and snack choices and what to look for. There are plenty of places to eat healthfully on campus, but this is one of my personal favorites that a few of my friends never knew about.

Picture class on the quad—your stomach grumbles that annoying grumble, and you think everyone hears it. (They may have, but you’ll never know.) Then your professor says those magic words: “Well that’s it for today…” and class ends twenty minutes earlier than expected. Now you can finally grab a bite before you run off to the next place. (You busy collegiette™ you!)
