Paul Presley, 20154/23/2013 |
Paul Presley is a sophomore Journalism and Radio-Television-Film major who loves movies, television and having a good time. A volunteer for Sneak Peek, an entertainment program on Texas Student Television, Paul is able to share his winning personality with the greater Austin community every Thursday night. HCTX: What are your plans after college? PP: After college, I would love to move to New York and pursue a career as a television writer on a quirky NBC sitcom. HCTX: Who is your biggest inspiration? PP: Tina Fey has to be one of my biggest inspirations because she has succeeded in both comedy and writing, and was able to have her own incredibly successful television show. HCTX: What has been your favorite moment in college so far? PP: Back in March, through Sneak Peek, I was able to interview Joss Whedon on the red carpet for his newest film. Joss is one of my idols because he has created amazing television programs like Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. HCTX: What is your ideal date? PP: My ideal date involves going to an Alamo Drafthouse event, like a quote-a-long, then out to dinner somewhere classy but cheap. Then we’d go back to one of our apartments to watch 30 Rock. |
What To Do Over Spring Break3/4/2013 |
With Spring Break less than a week away, the question on everyone’s minds is “Where am I going?” Whether you’ve had your trip planned for the last six months or are just starting to scrape together plans, we have the down and dirty on where your classmates are going, and who they’re going with! In a completely un-scientific survey, I asked our fellow Longhorns about their spring break plans, and the answers proved incredibly diverse. Believe it or not, most of the people I polled are heading home for a relaxing week of Mom’s cooking and snuggling with their puppies. The next largest group plans on staying in good ol’ ATX for the famed South by Southwest festival, which is really three festivals in one! It combines a world-renowned film festival, to which many celebrities including Shailene Woodley and Zac Efron travel; a music festival bursting with huge stars like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Kendrick Lamar; and an interactive festival which features the latest in gaming, gadgets and social media. Aside from visiting SXSW, there are so many other fantastic things to do in Austin during your week off, and if you get the chance, explore the city while it’s full of interesting people here for the festival! |

New App, Tinder: The Dating Solution?2/7/2013 |
With Valentine’s Day coming up, I know I’m not the only girl who is suddenly and painfully aware of her singleness. Face it: We can knock the “Hallmark holiday” all we want, but in the end, every girl wants to find the love of her life who gets her flowers or chocolates on February 14. Well, thanks to the people who brought us Match.com, we may have a way to beat the single blues. There’s a new free iPhone app called “Tinder” which promises to help you “break the ice” with people in your area. What is Tinder? According to its website, Tinder “finds out who you like nearby, and connects you with them if you’re also interested.” Let me break it down: You use your Facebook to set up an account, which only has your name, age, general area, a customized status, and up to five pictures including your profile picture. You can choose the radius in which you’d like to search as well as the gender of the people you’re looking for. Tinder then shows you pictures of the people who fulfill your criteria—you can either “like” or “nope” them, and they’ll never know unless you both “like” each other. If you do get a match, you can chat with your match through the app, and if it progresses further, eventually meet. Pros and Cons |

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be? Hmm… I would have to say I’m kind, funny, and different. What is the weirdest thing about you? The weirdest thing about me is that I was born with a hole in my aorta valve, and when I got older I had surgery to repair it. Take us through your ideal date. My ideal date would be to go scuba diving at one of the Top 50 diving spots in the world, such as the Cocos Islands in Costa Rica. Scuba diving is one of my favorite things to do. Modern Vintage with Mackenzie12/17/2012 |
Mackenzie, a sophomore theater arts major, was planning on doing her Christmas shopping at some local stores, so she "chose something that was casual but interesting enough to fit into the eclectic Austin shopping scene.” Mackenzie identifies her personal style as something that has a “retro feel while still being modern, like a vintage cut with contemporary prints or colors.” She works at Anthropologie, but loves to visit local Austin stores as well, such as Son of a Sailor, where she bought her necklace! |
Build Parties- A Collegiette's Wrap Up11/26/2012 |
It’s that time of the year again, Texas collegiettes! No, not that weird limbo between Thanksgiving and Christmas when no one wants to go to class…It’s build party season! Each year around this time, fraternities all across campus reveal the projects that they have spent most of the semester on, culminating in the most fun, most costume-filled, most theme-oriented parties all fall.
What is a “build party”? A build party is a huge party put on by a fraternity, usually in their back yard. Instead of a run-of-the-mill party, however, these events feature huge structures or stages built by the fraternity boys in keeping with their chosen theme. As one collegiette said, “Build parties are really fun because the builds make the party feel like it's a completely different environment than just the regular frat house. They basically transform the space into something completely new." The preparations for such a spectacle begin weeks in advance, with pledges and actives alike working on various projects to bring the entire party together, creating not only a fun time, but an experience. One Alpha Tau Omega pledge told me that he sees the builds as a bonding experience between him and his brothers. “For me the greatest thing about the build parties is getting to be a part of something bigger than yourself and seeing that played out through each build.”

The Business of Beauty: Lessons from Austin Beauty Week11/19/2012 |
Austin Beauty Week is a week when local salons and beauty-related businesses offer a number of their services at a reduced price to allow Austinites the chance to try out new services and products. However, there's a lesson to be found in everything, and this event seemed to have a theme: Strong women running businesses and looking great while doing it. We've highlighted a few lessons you can take with you. What Starts Here Austin Beauty Week is the brain-child of Meredith Davis, a UT alum who worked in marketing for six years before she started Austin Beauty Guide about a year and a half ago. She realized that with Restaurant Week and Fashion Week, Austin was missing a “celebration of health and beauty.” Beauty Week has had its second appearance in Austin, and next year Davis’s goal is to expand to other Texas cities, namely Dallas and Houston. In the words of its founder, Beauty Week is “a great way to treat yourself, get involved, and give back.” As with the first Beauty Week back in February of this year, Davis chose to sponsor a charity that was centered around women, her key demographic. This year’s charity was the Susan G. Komen foundation’s Austin chapter, which donates all of its money to local Austin women living with and fighting breast cancer, one of the top causes of death in American women. The participating businesses donated some of their proceeds to the cause, and in lieu of an entrance fee, attendees were encouraged to donate $10 to enter the events. |
