Interviews With W&M’s Rocket Magazine

4/30/2012

My Dear Collegiettes,

Hello. Hola. Tag. Bonjour. Privyet.

It’s time to welcome the summer with open arms, as the nights are lasting longer & warmer and the outfits becoming shorter, thinner, and well, long awaited!  What better way to begin to shift through your closets in the hopes of finding that perfect summer outfit than to know what the current trends are?  How do you know what the summer’s fashion will be, you ask? Well, over here at the College of William and Mary there is a student run & produced fashion magazine.  Yes, you heard me.  W&M’s own fashion Rocket Magazine sprung up in the spring of 2011, and is becoming very powerful with its articles and fashionista pictures.  Simply click on the links below to see for yourself on what all the talk is about:

Fall ’11 edition: http://issuu.com/rocketmagazine/docs/rocketfall2011

You see, I’ve been thinking, fellow collegiettes, about the neat ideas behind the projects.  Who came up with the ‘Sweet Escape’ design in the first edition, or what does the ‘Hunter & Hunted’ theme mean to the models, photographers, and the designers?  In order to answer these questions, I decided to go straight to the source.  Armed with my dazzling wit and instant Wi-Fi connection, I contacted the heads of each design section & models and interviewed them.  Lo and behold: provided below are my results.

Keep in mind, though, online readers that if you like what you see, support W&M’s Rocket Magazine.  Grab their free printed issues when they’re released ,‘like’ the FB page dedicated to these artistic, creative, and genius souls, and ‘follow’ their inspiring blog on Tumblr.

Meet the Costume Shop Ladies, Patricia Wesp and Mary Jo

9/29/2011

Here at the College of William and Mary the Theatre Department puts on multiple shows each semester, all of which are not only impressionable by the actors’ performance and technicians’ designs, but also the impressionable images the audience leaves with.  One of the greatest strengths this department has resides in the Costume Department.  The Costume Department has dressed actors in nearly every imaginable time period, the most recent set for the play “The Rover” by Aphra Behm.  The play took place in a festival during the 1600s in Spain & Italy.  William and Mary’s upcoming show takes place primarily in Zürich, Switzerland in the First World War.  This is the setting for Tom Stoppard’s play, “Travesties”.
However before I dive into a discussion of the designs & creations for these shows, I believe it is necessary to learn about the creators and their thoughts on costumes and fashion.  In an interview with the Costume Designer Patricia Wesp and Costume Shop Manager Mary Jo Damon, I was able to undercover their ideas and thoughts. Their personalities shone through the interview where they were charming, informative, and delightfully witty.

Simple Nail Trick: Just Add Water

8/28/2011

Tired of the regular single-color coat on your nails?  Paying too much for a manicure that doesn’t meet your desire for trendy, edgy nails? Here is an astonishingly simple technique to make your nails stand out and impress; and all you have to do is add water.

Step 1:  Gather your materials.

Dressing Like Vogue, College-Style

8/24/2011

In those rare moments I find myself with free time here at the College of William and Mary, I flip through the pages of a fashion magazine or weave about websites and gaze at pictures of models, or more specifically, their outfits.  I imagine myself wearing them and contemplate how the fabric would feel, how heavy or light it would be, what kind of accessories would work best, and more…yet despite all my day-dreaming it all boils down to one fundamental question: where can I get this at a reasonable price?
Let’s be honest here.  Most of the clothing in the magazines are out of the normal and affordable price range. Sure, that Red Strapless Print Chiffon Evening Dress Mila Kunis wore to 2011 SAG Awards Premiere is a ‘bargain’, but I personally consider $20 over $170 for a dress a true bargain.  To those fashionista reporters, please consider your audience; you break my heart each time you reveal the price for a desirable outfit.  I can feel my soul slither away when my eyes alight onthe outrageous price for a gorgeous dress, shirt, bag, or shoes. Surely there must be another alternative to this pricey route of being fashionable?
