Stylitics Seeks Fashion Forward Student10/24/2012 |
Stylitics, the social virtual closet site and iPhone app, is hosting a contest to unearth the most stylish student. Open to all college and high school students in the world, Stylitics will reward the most stylish student by showcasing their entire closet online alongside celebrities, bloggers, and style icons with the ability to shop, share, and create outfits. The contest will run from October 25th through November 4th. The 10 students who have earned the most style points within that time frame will be voted on by industry experts based on the contents of their closets and outfits they have created. The top 100 students with the most points will also be granted exclusive early access to the launch of Stylitics’ new celebrity closets feature in November, giving users the ability to shop, share, and explore their favorite celebrities’ and style icons’ actual closets. To enter, users simply need to create an account indicating that they are a student and select their school. Style points are accrued by adding items to your virtual closet and checking in outfits, so the more you add the more you earn! Winners will be voted on by a panel of fashion industry experts and announced on or around November 8th. Stylitics is a social virtual closet platform for people who care about fashion and personal style. It is a fun, connected, intelligent extension of a user’s actual closet, allowing them to share ideas with friends, collaborate on outfits, and explore new looks. Stylitics remembers every detail about what you own, buy, and wear. It keeps track of your outfit history, allows you to share your personal style with friends and followers via a public Style Profile, and gives you new ideas for how to wear the items in your closet. With the Stylitics iPhone app, you can now take your entire closet on the go. |

Learning From Jennifer Livingston10/4/2012 |
What We Can Learn From Jennifer Livingston Today I was procrastinating some reading for school and came across this video... I would love to find this man and explain to him how ignorant and disgusting he is. All anger aside (though I think a whole lot is justified), we as women, and members of society, can take so much from these four dignified minutes with La Crosse, Wisc. WKTB reporter Jennifer Livingston. First and foremost, I think it’s important to address the literal surface issue here. This video reminds us that we live in a world where a woman is constantly judged based on her appearance. I, for one, think this is deplorable. Livingston shows in this video, as I’m sure she does in her daily broadcasts (which her shallow critic admitted he does not watch) intelligence, grace and compassion. Someone judging her appearance, and by default her lifestyle and her character, didn’t seem to concern Livingston as much as the heart of what this man did and said. Which brings me to a point that I make somewhat reluctantly, but personally find to be an intriguing debate to engage in- this man watched one morning show and decided to personally attack someone he has never met. Before I indulge in any gender debates, I’ll acknowledge that women can be just as shallow as men at times. I am certainly not going to try and suggest that no woman has ever called another fat, or ugly, or a bitch. |

Dear 2016, Advice From a Senior9/21/2012 |
Yesterday I was talking to a friend and I said a sentence that started with “when I grow up.” And then it hit me- I am grown up, but that doesn’t mean I can’t keep starting sentences like that. Next week my senior year starts, and it’s going to be a short one. I have three months of classes, three months of an internship and that’s it. It’s not uncommon to graduate early from Northwestern, but I find myself feeling kind of sad and a lot scared. The fact of the matter is, I don’t know what’s next and I’m not sure I’m ready to decide. Yet somehow, I find myself here writing advice for the Class of 2016… I’ll give it the best I’ve got. Here are the things I do know. |
Getting Englanded... Casey Goes to Barcelona8/13/2012 |
Barcelona was my first encounter with a) traveling with friends and b) a language that is not my first. I was nervous and excited and not at all sure what to expect going to Spain. After all, it took the four of us (Mystie, Abby, David and I) something like three hours to book our flights and hostel. The planning was really the first part of the adventure for us. It was confusing and a long process, but we somehow managed to get our flights and somewhere to stay! A couple of days before we Facebook messaged about what we'd like to do when we were there, and narrowed it down to a few big things. So without further ado, we took off to Barcelona! At 3 a.m. Without sleep. Luckily, we could sleep for a couple of hours on the plane and we certainly did. This was especially fortunate considering what it takes to land in a foreign country... Getting through Border control (aka a long, long line of people filtering slowly through customs) Exchanging currency took us roughly 8.2 hours to get through the line (that's an extreme over-exaggeration, but it was still quite lengthy) Figuring out how to get from the airport to the hostel, which I realized the night before was on the other side of Barcelona (Again, we were fortunate that the woman at the airport spoke English and could give us directions easily! I tried my Spanish out for a second, but on 2 hours of sleep it came out more in mumbles than words.) Making out way to the train, where we no longer had the English crutch and bought our tickets. And all of that was just at the airport! It was pretty overwhelming, and a huge relief to sit on the train, knowing to look for the station the woman had told us to go to. We took one more train to Maragall, and that is where the hilarity began. Here are a few things I learned while trying to get to our hostel: |
Her Campus and Bing in Chicago5/17/2012 |
Wonder who’s following Glee with you as you search the web for the latest news? Wish you could figure out how to make a reservation at that great new restaurant from their confusing website? The new Bing -gets more social so you can spend less time searching and more time doing!
Bing brings in your friends from Facebook and experts from Twitter and blogs to give you information from people who know about what you’re searching for. This way, you can get recommendations from what your friends have liked, and even ask them a question while you’re searching. And because sometimes experts and enthusiasts might know about what you’re searching for, we bring you their tweets and blogs so that you can follow them and learn from them as well. Bing is also making it easier for you to take action on searches where you just want to get something done. The center column, called snapshot, simplifies your search for things like restaurants, hotels, and movies by giving you pictures, maps, and reviews you need to make a well-informed decision. They have even partnered with OpenTable to give you the option of making a reservation without clicking away from your search. The first column is the classic search you remember! Bing has just removed all of the clutter that gets in the way of the information you really want. |
