5 Tumblrs for End of Semester Procrastination4/24/2013 |
There are a little over 2 more weeks of classes left and it’s reached that point where every undergrad’s main prerogative is to procrastinate as efficiently as possible. Our friends are beginning to temporarily disable their facebooks so there’s less to look at when spending time on our normal sites and we need to find new ways to occupy our time. So here are our top 5 Tumblrs to procrastinate on.
5. Onion-Like Headlines in Real-Life
Being an online-magazine, we know how hard it can be to come up with amazing headlines sometimes. And the newspaper that we feel wins the award for A+ headlines all the time is The Onion. We all know it, the satirical website who pokes fun at all sorts of stories and even tricks the most gullible of our friends into believing that President Obama is part vampire, or something as ridiculous. But sometimes there are those headlines that occur in real life that you have to double take -- “is this real news?” and this tumblr comes right out to let you know, yes, that is real news.

Spring Fling 20134/5/2013 |
One of our favorite events of the year, Spring Fling, is finally within our grasp. Come down to campus with some cash to burn to play some amazing carnival games, have some snacks and watch some bands perform. It'll be the first time a lot of us have thought about Yellowcard in years, so we might as well get brushed up on their music and get back into the rock mindset we had back when we were in middle school. Binghamton's Spring Fling is known as one of the best, so let's screw it, get crazy and have some fun! |
Graduation: Everyone Else Has it Figured Out4/5/2013 |
Class of 2013, we’re all feeling it at this point. The ‘real world’ is breathing down our necks and expecting us to start paying back our student loans at some point in the coming year and all of our friends seem to know what they’re going to do after graduation. Everyone has it figured out except for you. So now your only prospects are to go home, move back in with the ‘rents and hope to maybe get your job back at the Panera down the road.
Or so it seems.
Yah, we might have only a month left before graduation and everyone’s probably asking you what you’re planning on doing after you’re done, but that’s no reason to panic. There is absolutely no reason why we should let what others feel is the right way to live our lives dictate how we, well, live our lives.
But maybe this is the best thing, not having a job. Some kids are gonna go to grad school because they think it’s what they need, not what they want. And others are just going to get a job working at Subway so that they can go shopping, just a placeholder until they get that big corporate job all of our studying has been building up to.

Spring Break's Over, Now What?4/5/2013 |
Unfortunately, we only had one break this entire semester and after what seemed like an all-too-short Spring Break where most of us just went home and ate gorged out on mom’s (or dad’s) cooking for the past week, we’re back to the same old drudgery. But we have to have things to look forward to! And of course we do!
The second half of Spring semester might be the better one. The events before break are all cold and snowy and dreary but now we’re going to be getting sun every now and again. We’ve got some other great events to look forward to!
1. Spring Fling Sure, we may have Yellowcard and we may not really remember anything they’ve done since “Ocean Avenue”, but after listening to last year’s album on Southern Air on Spotify, it sounds like they’re pretty much doing the same sort of thing since their 2003 album Ocean Avenue rocketed them into our middle schooler hearts. But even that tiny setback isn’t going to put a damper on the fun that Bing has during Spring Fling. Hey, we ended up on a list of the best Spring Flings across the country, so we might as well take advantage of all of the carnival games and food and screw the music. We’re not gonna let this ruin our party!

Amazing Women in History|| Boudica3/5/2013 |
Ever since 1987, March has been designated Women's History Month. And in honor of that tradition, we at Her Campus Binghamton would like to give a shout out to all of the awesome women in history and on campus. And to start it off, here's Boudica. Reaching back into the bowels of history, you'll find this Iceni Queen really kicked some butt back around 43 AD. She was married to the king of the Iceni tribe and was of royal descent herself. And at that time, Rome was the big baddie in the area. The King, Prasutagus, had decided to protect his land and his people, he'd strike up a peace treaty with Rome. And, as was custom, in his will, he wanted his wife and daughters to be co-heirs with the Roman Empire. Of course, things didn't play out the way he had planned once Prasutagus died, come on, when did the Romans ever play fair? And they decided not to honor the 'co-heir' thing, since they didn't see women as being able to inherit. So they planned on taking Iceni just like they had taken other tribal areas during that time. The Romans went in, and legend has it that they even beat Boudica and her daughters were raped and the loan sharks were called in. |

Life Changers || What if Money Was No Object2/28/2013 |
When it gets closer and closer to graduation, I get more and more concerned with 'what am I going to do when I'm done?' and when it comes down to it, I'm terrified that what I choose won't make me any money. But every now and again, I start to think about this video and realize I need to think about what what makes me happy and what I would want to do if money were no object. And perhaps you won't think about this right now, but I promise you that eventually your happiness will catch up with your life goals and it's better to make that decision now before you're thousands of dollars and years away from when you could have made a change. My freshman year, I thought I'd study to be a translator, but remembering my father's words that he was fully prepared to have me be the 'artist' of the family and not make a lot of money, pushed me to make that final decision that I can do what I like, not what I think will bring me money. I have a friend who, before graduating, was going to follow the road she had thought she needed to go down to keep herself in money and keep her family happy. And then after a semester in post-graduate school, she realized it wasn't for her, that she was unhappy and changed her mind and decided to pursue her dream. She may not have all the money that she had hoped for once she was done with school, but she's happy and isn't that what matters most? Money doesn't make us happy, it's the people and the work we're involved in. So, what we need to start doing is to focus on those things that make us happy rather than the things that make us money. Money's great, but if your heart isn't into being a heart surgeon, is it better for your patients? Probably not. If you're absolutely in love with mechanical engineering, good for you, keep going! But if you'd rather ride horses, maybe you should focus on a way to make yourself happy instead. The money will eventually come. |
