A little Faithe goes a long way

11/16/2011

She always sports a smile and has an encouraging word to share with each and every person she meets. Reverend Faithe Beam is a wonderful role model to Campbell Collegiettes™ of how a strong, Christian, young woman should live her life. Life is not all business for this Collegiette™ role model, however. For Reverend Beam’s 40th birthday she went skydiving, and describes the experience as “amazing!” With her positive outlook and strong faith, it comes as no shock that Reverend Beam is this week’s Campus Celebrity.

Where did you attend college?
I graduated from Appalachian State University in 1990 with a degree in music education.

Where are you from?
I was born in Raleigh, NC, but I grew up in Shelby, NC.

Please tell me a little bit about yourself and your family.
My father is a retired minister and my mother a retired nurse.  I have two sisters and I am the middle child.  My husband, Tom, and I have been married 17 years and we have a six year old son, Patrick.

Brain Food

11/15/2011

The time of the semester that every Collegiette™ dreads is just around the corner. Exam week is quickly approaching, and that means less time to cook healthy meals.  This means that what you do have time to scarf down is particularly crucial. Loading up on fruits and veggies is the best way to get your mind focused on the things that matter most, like wrapping up papers and studying for finals. Sitting down with a bowl of freshly steamed broccoli or a tossed fruit salad is just not manageable for many Collegiettes™ due to lack of time and lack of a full kitchen. A great way to still work in some vitamins, protein and minerals that are helpful in both focusing on your studies and maintaining a healthy diet is to add some sweet potatoes to your diet. The following are some tasty (and quick and easy!) sweet potato recipes for every kitchen set-up.

Dorm Room/Microwave:

If you don’t have anything but a microwave in your kitchen arsenal, a great way to prepare a sweet potato is baked style via the microwave. Directions are as follows:

What is your major and what year are you?
            Trust and Wealth Management Pre-Law

Where are you from?

What do you like most about Campbell?
I love the small class sizes and close-knit community atmosphere.

Movie Review : Scream 4

10/27/2011

Growing up, I was a big fan of the horror/slasher trilogy, Scream. So naturally when Scream 4, the latest installment in the saga, was released I was one of the first in line to see it. With Halloween just days away, it is the perfect movie for a Collegiette™ scary movie marathon. Scream 4 is a new release on Netflix and RedBox, just in time for Halloween.

The latest addition to the series picks up ten years after the events of Scream 3. Sidney Prescott, the protagonist and prevailing target of the series, has recovered from her traumatic past and managed to move on with her life by writing a novel about her experiences. She returns to her hometown for a book signing and it is not long before her past returns to haunt her. During the book signing, she is informed by Dewey that the horrendous murders have begun again by a new masked killer.

The movie plays on the horror film stereotype, as a movie recreation of the events of the first three movies in the series have been made into horror films that the high schoolers in the movie watch religiously each Halloween. However, there is a new twist; along with the new digital, tech-savvy generation that has replaced Sidney’s generation, comes to the technology for the killer to be sicker than ever. Webcams enable the masked slasher to share their murders with everyone on the web via a live feed, making the killings more sadistic than ever.

Erin Dickert

10/19/2011

In the fast-paced life that is college, it can be exceptionally hard to find genuine, kind people. However, Campbell Collegiettes™ are lucky enough to have an inspiring, friendly face on campus, Miss Erin Dickert. Erin wears an immense array of hats from sister and daughter to Pharmacy student and President of Phi Delta Chi, adding to the amazement of how this Collegiette™ keeps such a positive attitude. From her mission trips to Uganda to her dedicated work ethic in school, Erin is a role model that every Collegiette™ could learn something from.

What is your major and what year are you?
I am a third year Pharmacy student and will graduate in May 2013.

Where are you from?
I grew up in Greenville, South Carolina and then moved to The Woodlands, Texas.  My family moved to Huntersville, North Carolina the summer before my senior year of high school and currently, that is home for me.

Please tell me a little bit about yourself.
I am incredibly outgoing and enjoy meeting new people.  I have a huge heart for Uganda and have had the opportunity to travel there twice in the last year.  My heart is totally engulfed in Ugandan culture, the people there, the way of life, and health disparities among the country.  I try really hard to not be a “nerd” on a daily basis but pharmacology and therapeutics are a part of me these days.  I am extremely involved in Pharmacy School, including being President of my Fraternity (Phi Delta Chi).  I have an incredible family – two sisters (one at Appalachian State and one in high school) and wonderful parents who have been married for 26 years.  I laugh all the time and enjoy spending time with dear friends.  I am so blessed.

A Prescription for Success: Campbell opens PA school

10/5/2011

On August 22, Campbell Collegiettes™ welcomed a new program to the family as 34 students attended their first day of class in the 28-month physician assistant program in the newly remodeled Carrie Rich Hall. The launch of the master of physician assistant practice program coincides with Campbell’s plan to open a School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013.

These students will no doubt have job placement upon graduation, as experts predict that by 2020 there will be a shortage of more than 90,000 physicians in the United States. The focus of the program will be primary care; training students to practice in medically disadvantaged areas. The program will incorporate students from a variety of health-related fields in an effort to stress interdisciplinary education.

Campbell will be one of the few schools that require students to complete a course in orthopedics in their first year of training. This requirement stems from statistical basis that 20 percent of primary care office visits pertain to musculoskeletal problems.

Campbell Collegiettes™ who become enrolled in the proposed School of Osteopathic Medicine will be trained with the physician assistant students in an effort to learn how to work together efficiently.

Joanna Coda

9/28/2011

You may know her from the tutoring center at Campbell, or you may have just seen her gorgeous smile around campus, but if you’ve had the pleasure of meeting Campbell Collegiette™ Joanna Coda, then it’s no surprise that she’s this week’s Campus Celebrity. In addition to tutoring English, Joanna also teaches ESL to Masters students at Campbell, is an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences, and volunteers at a local pregnancy center. Talk about a busy Collegiette™! When Joanna is not busy being a Good Samaritan, she enjoys writing music, going deep-sea fishing and anything involving the ocean.

Dr. Rambo

9/22/2011

Have you ever planned to be a ballerina or an artist, just to come to college and realize you’re your dream job was just not practical? Well, never fear Collegiettes™, Campbell English Professor, Dr. Elizabeth Rambo was in same shoes when she was in college. It took Dr. Rambo a couple of tries before realizing her dream of being a teacher. From Africa to Scotland, Dr. Rambo is also an avid world traveler who is especially passionate about anything dealing with Arthurian Legends, Chaucer, and Celtic Studies. When Dr. Rambo is not teaching Campbell Collegiettes™, she can be found watching Hollywood movies or reading.

Where are you originally from and where do you currently reside?
That is a hard question for me. My parents were missionaries in Africa when I was growing up. I lived in the mountains of North Carolina until I was 10. I finished high school in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I would say I’m from NC as much as anywhere. I currently live in Lillington, NC.

Please tell me a little bit about yourself.
My parents were missionaries for over twenty-five years in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. My parents are now retired, but my dad still works part time. My brother is a high school English teacher. My sister is an x-ray technician; she is married to a former marine pilot. I have three nephews and one niece. I don’t have any children, but I do have two cats.
