Très Chic: Top Tips for How to European-ize Your Style

10/1/2012

If you’ve ever spent time abroad, you’ve probably had to endure at some point all the usual, clichéd American stereotypes. And while politics and cultural differences may be one thing, it seems the disparity in our style choices can actually be the difference that’s as vast as the Atlantic itself.

Truth is, us Americans often get a bad rap from our European peers when it comes to everyday fashion. While studying abroad in Florence, Italy, I learned the hard way what would make me instantly stick out as a tourist (packing those denim short-shorts turned out to be a complete waste of luggage space), and over time, I incorporated pieces into my closet that allowed me to look and feel more genuinely “Italian”—well, at least as Italian as a pasty blonde American can ever appear to be.

The world may be more global and Americanized now than ever, but picking out an American in Paris or for that matter, European tourists on the streets of New York, can often be as easy as uno, dos, tres.

So, maybe you’re suiting up to study overseas this fall and don’t want to look like you just got off the boat, or perhaps you just want to add a sophisticated foreign twist to your everyday style—after all, weren’t we all inspired by the Middleton sisters this summer?

Fashion week may be over, but there’s always time to update your look. Check out what girls across the world are wearing—and what essential tips we can pick up from our edgy European peers.

20 Reasons We Can't Wait to Get Back on Campus

8/14/2012

Two months ago, heads buried in books, cramming for finals and craving lazy sun-filled afternoons, we were pretty darn well ready to pack up and dive into our summertime fantasies. Behind the pages of our econ textbooks, the idea of fabulous new internships, various vacations and European adventures, annual summer flings and—let’s not forget—homemade meals you don’t have to swipe an ID for, seemed all too appealing.

Two months in, we’re over it—and itchin’ to head back to campus.
Whether your hometown is boring you to tears, or your stressful internship has you desperately missing a college schedule (read: no Friday classes, ever) we all have our own reasons for counting down the days ‘til September. Here are collegiettes’™ top 20:

1. Sharing the Same Address as the BFFs
Turns out that in the real world, all your faves don’t actually live down the hall from you. Sigh. Arranging get-togethers between summer jobs, long commutes and vacations is a mess. How much cooler was it to grab the girls for dinner simply by swinging by their adjacent rooms, instead of the tangled mess that is trying to plan get-togethers during the summer?

Summer Internship S.O.S.: How To Deal With Internship Issues

7/9/2012

After the long process of resume rewrites and anxiously awaited call-backs, Shelby M., 20, a junior at NYU, finally scored a competitive publishing internship. And like every other eager intern on that uneasy first day, Shelby awoke to an all-too-early alarm, ironed out an appropriate outfit from her new wardrobe and allotted enough time on the subway for even the most extreme of delays and disasters.

What Shelby did not plan for, however, was a deserted office. It was 20 minutes of awkward waiting before a receptionist eventually moseyed in. With no idea of what to do with the bright-eyed intern, the woman only shooed Shelby into an empty lobby. Nearly an hour later, the (newly disheartened) intern was finally put to work—by sorting the office mail.

The internship eventually improved, but the whole experience was not without its major curveballs and setbacks. And chances are, if you’ve ever been an intern anywhere, you’ve experienced something like Shelby did—whether it, too, had to do with that awkward first-day confusion, or whether the chaos lasted throughout. Truth is, we often put so much energy and focus into earning our dream internships that it’s easy to be totally disappointed by how the experience actually shapes up.

But hey collegiettes™, that doesn’t mean you don’t have a hand in directing your internship. Sure, you may be on the (very) low end of the totem pole, but there are still actions you can take to make the most out of your situation. Now that summer internship season is in full swing, you may have a few woes of your own, and we’re here to help you smooth them out!
