Maria DiLorenzo, Director of Spiritual Life

12/13/2012

Our campus celebrity is the Director of Spiritual Life, Maria DiLorenzo! She is a Texas native, but has been living in Boston for over 10 years. Bentley has been blessed with her services for almost six years now! Maria was previously a campus minister at Regis College, and she is currently working to bring awareness about the value of spirituality to the Bentley community.

1.    How did you become involved in the spiritual life center?

Before I came to Bentley in 2007, I had been working in college campus ministry for several years at Boston College and Regis College.  Not unlike most people, my professional life took a few (unexpected) different roads as new opportunities came to me.  I soon was drawn to work in Student Activities, which eventually brought me to Bentley.  In 2011, the Director of the Spiritual Life Center position became available, and I found myself attracted to the work I had done once before…and here I am!

F.I.R.E. Presents "GEEKED UP"

11/9/2012

F.I.R.E. is hosting “GEEKED UP”, one of the biggest parties on campus, holding a capacity of 450 people. F.I.R.E. is a recreational step-dance team that is broken up into two groups: F.I.R.E. Step Squad and F.I.R.E. Dance. They are the best in the state, and they teach STEP to students on Bentley’s campus, no matter what level of experience they may have. They do competitions annually at different schools. This year, the competition will be held at Tufts University’s Break the Stage competition on Saturday November 10th at 7:00 P.M. Bentley’s own F.I.R.E. will be in this state-wide competition to compete for the title of “Best in the State”.

“GEEKED UP” is their annual party, where they usually celebrate their first place victory in this state-wide competition. Come support F.I.R.E at their competition or come join their party and have a great time! This year’s theme is to wear “nerdy” or” geeky” outfits. So be ready on Saturday, November 17th at 10 P.M., because the first 100 Bentley students will get in for free with their I.D.s!  Students arriving before 11 P.M. have to pay an admission fee of $5 and $7 after 11 P.M. F.I.R.E. is welcoming both students on and off campus to come join them. Guests will need to bring both a school I.D. and a state issued I.D. The dance will be held in the LaCava Center EDR. Note that this is a cash only event, and coat check is only $1! Bring your best geek attire and join one of the biggest parties on campus! For more information, go on F.I.R.E.'s Facebook page.

Amanda King, Director of Sustainability and Special Advisor to the President

10/11/2012

Amanda King has been the woman behind all the sustainability projects at Bentley since 2009. She has worked with the Bentley staff to create more sustainable uses of water and electricity all throughout campus. She is a great advocate for Bentley’s Black-Out Challenge, and motivating students to become more environmentally friendly. Her success as the Manager of Sustainability has led to her new position as Director of Sustainability and the Special Advisor to President Gloria Larson. Amanda’s efforts have made Bentley a much greener school, and she has many more projects to make Bentley even greener!

Her Campus Bentley: How did you end up working at Bentley in the Office of Sustainability?

Nicole Chabot-Wieferich, Director of Student Activities & Her Campus Bentley Advisor

9/22/2012

Our campus celebrity is our Director of Student Activities, Nicole Chabot-Wieferich, who is also the new Faculty/Staff Advisor of our group, Her Campus Bentley!

She has years of experience in the higher education field and we’re excited to have worked with her during the past Spring 2012 semester! Nicole previously worked at Brandeis University as part of the Student Activities team. Although her students will miss her, Bentley is lucky enough to have such an experienced person leading our Student Activities. I sat down with her to find out more about her!

Her Campus Bentley: What made you decide to go into Student Activities?

Nicole Chabot-Wieferich: I was extremely involved in co-curricular activities when I was in college. The Student Activities office was my home away from home. When I realized that Student Affairs could be a career, I instantly knew that it was what I was meant to do. My passions for education, sociology, event planning, and working with people, all came together in the work that I do and I absolutely love it!

HCB: What’s your most memorable experience while working with students?

NCW: It’s too difficult to choose a most memorable experience I’ve had working with students. My favorite moments, however, are those where I can see the direct influence of my work on a students’ success. Whether that be a successful event, a personal breakthrough, or general growth and maturation, seeing a student learn and grow is what motivates me to continue doing this work.

HCB: What’s your favorite part of being Director of Student Activities?

Looking for a good time off campus? Want to take it easy this year for Halloween?

Head to Salem, MA for some spooky adventures:

Ghost Hunting & Wax Museum

Salem has always been a hot spot for those looking for something spooky.  The city, best known for the start of the Salem Witch Trials in 1692 is said to be haunted by many of the deceased.  Derby Square Tours offers two options: the “Witch Trial Trail” and the “Terror Trail” walking tour.

The one-hour, candlelight Witch Trial Trail tour departs at 7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday nights, and is available from October 1st through October 30th. The tour starts only two blocks from the Salem Visitor Center, so it’s an easy location to find. After your tour, take a walk down to the Salem Wax Museum and explore Frankenstein’s Laboratory and watch a real witch cast spells.  Salem also hosts many other witch and ghost-themed events thoughout the month of October.
