"The Buried Life" - An Interview with Dave & Ben3/8/2010 |
Have you ever thought that was something missing in your life? Felt like you wanted more?
Many people go to college with the cliché of “finding yourself” or going on a journey asking questions of why. Or perhaps you made of list of things you wanted to do before you die. Help deliver a baby. Attend a party at the Playboy Mansion. Start a dance in a public place. Send a message in a bottle. Take a kid on a toy shopping spree. Start a television show. Tell a joke on Late Night Television. Sing the National Anthem to a packed stadium. Sound familiar?
Four friends and average guys from Canada set out on an adventure that started four years ago as what they called an “organic process” when they sat down and just started talking. A list of 100 things to do before they die was created by Ben Nemtin, Dave Lingwood, Duncan Penn and Jonnie Penn. For everything they accomplish on their list, they help a stranger do something on theirs. Part of the inspiration comes from a poem written by Matthew Arnold in 1852 called “The Buried Life”. Jonnie had to read it for one of his English classes and had brought it to the guys and they all felt that the message from the piece was exactly what they were feeling. “It’s about how we live, our daily lives becomes buried. We have a desire to live a buried life,” said Ben. There was something missing in our lives. We wanted something more meaningful. And we just started filming it.” One of their tasks to complete on the list was to be in a television show- little did they know it would be Music Television (MTV) crossing off number 53 on their list. |
