The Ultimate Post-Exam Pampering Session

5/17/2013

What’s the first thing you’re going to do once you finish your exams? Do a victory lap of the forum? Head straight to the Ram? Or more likely, pass out from exhaustion?

Exam season is a stressful time for any girl and once it’s over it’s time to take care of yourself again! I’m willing to bet any kind of skincare routine has gone out the window in favour of early starts and late night cramming. Spending the last month staring at a computer screen in a dark corner of the library won’t have done your skin any favours either. Once you finish your exams, it’s time to restore some of your inner beauty – and inner calm!

The express facial at Space Hair and Beauty is the perfect way to do just that. It is forty five minutes of pure heaven, designed to cleanse and boost your skin whilst acting as the perfect pick-me-up after such a stressful exam period. I was lucky enough to be invited along to try it out. I stepped in to the salon exhausted and in need of some serious me-time. I left feeling completely refreshed and ready to take on the world – or at least a night out with the girls.

What We Can Learn From the Met Ball Gala

5/12/2013

Almost all of you have a big event coming up soon, be it a university ball, a twenty-first birthday party or a summer wedding to attend. You might be struggling with outfit ideas, or wondering how to stand out and break away from your usual look. Why not let those who have plenty of experience in this area teach you some valuable lessons? The celebrities who attended the Met Ball last week have to attend huge, glamorous events all the time, which makes them the perfect people to learn a lesson or two from about dressing for an occasion. Here are some lessons you can learn from the Met Ball, before your next big event.

Don’t try to take on all the trends at once

Whilst a nod to the most recent trends can keep your look current, don’t get carried away and try them all at once. SJP clearly did not get the memo on this one. Trying out plaid, prints or a statement head piece might be a great way to add some interest to a simple black dress. Putting them all together will make your outfit mismatched, and make you look like you are trying way too hard to be cool. Another lesson we can learn here is to make sure your dress covers your underwear. That shouldn’t really have to be a lesson, but apparently no one thought to teach Sarah.

Use gold to add glitz

Exeter Hockey Varsity

3/19/2013

Seize a chance to see boys in shorts and raise money for charity by heading to the Hockey Varsity on the 24th March. EUMHC will be playing Cardiff & UWIC in the final National League fixture of the hockey season. With only one point separating the teams at the top of the table, this game could be Exeter’s chance for promotion. There will also be a DJ and hot food on sale to keep you entertained whilst you’re cheering on our boys. Tickets cost £5 and the proceeds will go towards supporting RNLI, Wheels4Life and Unogwaja Challenge. Charity, music and Exeter sport – do you need any more convincing? We thought not!

The Photos Victoria's Secret Don't Want You To See

2/18/2013

Who wouldn’t like a body like a Victoria’s Secret model? A flat stomach, great boobs and flawless skin are top of most girls’ body wish-lists. But it turns out that even VS models can’t achieve the perfect body – not without the help of air brushing, anyway.

Pictures revealed by Jezebel.com show the extent to which Doutzen Kroes has been airbrushed for the VS swimsuit campaign. Whist we’ve all become used to the odd airbrushing of lines and wobbles on models in magazines, these pictures show just how much pictures are manipulated for public consumption.

Doutzen is already absolutely gorgeous, which makes us wonder why the images have been altered so much. The folds of skin around her waist and armpit have been removed to create a Barbie-smooth body. Although airbrushing is now expected in a big fashion shoot, this level of alteration should be a concern to girls everywhere. Victoria’s Secret are effectively putting images of body perfection into women’s heads that aren’t attainable. The girls subjecting themselves to punishing gym regimes to get a body like Doutzen’s probably don’t realise that despite all of her working-out she doesn’t even have that body!

This image is equally worrying in terms of the extent of manipulation going on in the photo:

The Five Fashion Crimes Committed by Exeter's Guys

2/15/2013

Although HerCampus is for girls, we know boys have a sneaky peak at it from time to time, so we wanted to use the opportunity to have a talk with you guys about some issues that have come to light with your fashion choices. Although you all came to Exeter looking fairly individual and well-dressed, slowly but surely during first term something comes over you and you all morph into one stereotypical Exeter guy. Some of it we love – chinos? Fab. Shirts? Can’t get enough of them! Other looks… not so much. So we’re here to tell you, as kindly (but honestly!) as possible, that some of your beloved looks have got to go. Sorry boys!

Stash

Here is a task for you all on your next trip up to campus. Stand in the Forum and do a full 360 degree turn. It is guaranteed that there will be at least one male dressed in ‘stash’. The question is, when did matching tracksuits become acceptable? Of course the need for stash is understood: you play for a sports team, you need the kit to represent your club and to work out in. The occasional tracksuit on the way to the gym is completely tolerable. However, we just can’t figure out your need to wear it all the time!

One can only assume that you arrived at University naked, armed only with a pair of flip-flops and proceeded to buy your entire wardrobe at the Fresher’s Squash. If you have such great athletic bodies, why do you feel the need to cover yourself up with layers and layers of stash? Walking around in full Rugby stash may make you feel like Jonny Wilkinson (we wish) but the matching trackies remind us more of Vicky Pollard. Our advice to you men out there: Keep the hoodies in the kit bag, grab a tight white t-shirt and give us something we want to look at.

And look, even Jonny looks better out of his ‘stash’.

Dave Wall

1/30/2013

This week I managed to pin down Exeter’s busiest tap-dancing rugby player Dave Wall find out how he manages to make time for all of his exploits. As well as being social sec of the rubgy club he is also the promoter of Exeter’s newest night – Chasing Tails – and performed in Footlight’s latest musical hit Copa Cabana. We don’t know how he does it!

Age: 22

Degree:  International Relations – 3rd year

Nicknames:  From first year in the rugby club it was “The Great Wall of Dave” (ironically) and at work I’m known as “Dancing Dave” for obvious reasons.

Hometown: London

What’s it like balancing your roles as club promoter, social sec, barman and starlet?

Busy! But I wouldn’t have it any other way. It certainly helps that my job, rugby socials and promoting are all at Walkabout and my boss is pretty relaxed about me dashing in and out of shifts.   Oh and I wouldn’t be able to survive without my bike and packed lunches/suppers.

Which do you enjoy most?

I couldn’t possibly say, mainly because if I only did one of them I’m sure I’d get bored without the others. But put it this way, an ideal day would involve dashing from training straight to rehearsals and then straight on to walkabout.

What is the most unforgettable thing you have witnessed as rugby social sec?

Body Beautiful: Girls, Don't Hate Yourselves!

1/23/2013

The turn of the New Year always brings guilt about overindulgence and attendance (or lack of it) at the gym. However, girls never stop to question why exactly they face relentless pressure to be skinny. Everywhere you look there is just one body type on show: stick-thin. For most of us this is neither attainable nor desirable. Imagine how much happier we would be if we learned to love our own bodies rather than trying to emulate someone else’s. We should be demanding a range of body shapes to be visible in the media to reinforce what we already know – that everyone and every size is beautiful in its own special way. To do our small part at Her Campus we have compiled a selection of fantastic, fuller-figured women for you to enjoy. This is not to say that skinnny bodies are unattractive because every body type is gorgeous in its own unique way. However, skinny figures are featured so heavily in the media that we wanted to dedicate this article to a different body type because we see way too little of curvy girls in our day-to-day media. If you are ever hating on your curves come back here and remember that you really are fabulous and these women show just how desirable your body shape is!

Love her or hate her, you have got to admire Kim Kardashians curves. She knows how to style her figure to catch everyone's eye for all the right reasons.

New Year, Gorgeous You: Your Beauty Resolutions for 2013

1/18/2013

The New Year is the perfect time to start afresh with your beauty routine. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut and use the same products day after day, but trying out new make up and hair care can really refresh your look. We have compiled the ultimate list of beauty resolutions for you to follow in 2013. Try out these tips to keep you looking fabulous the whole year through.

I will always use primer before foundation

Primer is one of those products that no one ever seems to know how to use or why they need to use it. However, once you get your hands on some you will wonder how you ever lived without it. On your skin it has a velvety, powder texture. It covers up your pores and minimises facial oil to provide a flawless base on which to apply foundation. Many girls make the mistake of piling on the powder to reduce shine, when in actual fact a base product that reduces oil beneath your foundation is much more effective. We recommend SmashBox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer. It is a little pricey at £25, but you only need to use a pea size amount before applying foundation. It manages to give your skin a completely airbrushed look. The gorgeous texture goes on like a dream and you will be shine-free for the entire night, which is a pretty priceless promise!

I will give hair powder a try

Your Sales Shopping Sorted

1/10/2013

Now that the festive period is well and truly over, the sales have been unleashed upon us. People tend to take one of two approaches to sale shopping: run and hide until it’s all over, or dive in to the nearest pile of discounted clothing. It is always easy to get carried away with the bargains on offer but there is nothing worse than coming home with bags of clothes bought for the price rather than the style. Our guide to the sales will help you to spot the gems among the junk and spend your Christmas money wisely this January. Make it your New Year’s resolution to make the most of this year’s sales and get some things you’ll love all year long.

Be a savvy shopper

What We Wore to Christmas Dinner

12/10/2012

You might not have got to go to Her Campus' Christmas Dinner (poor you!) but that doesn't mean you can't have a sneaky peek at what we wore on the night. If you're in serious need of outfit inspiration for the festive season then look no further!

Kate:

I wore this black lace detail dress from Urban Outfitters – it has a sleek outline and it’s a brilliant fit for girls with hips! I teamed it with simple smoky eyes. I used a base of brown eye shadow (Mac) and blended in a matt black eye shadow (Mac again!) on top. Finally I added some black gel eyeliner to the bottom eyelid for dramatic eyes!
