From Bland to BAM: Bring Life to College Dorms and Apartments

9/17/2012

College students struggle to adjust to dorm or apartment life in their first years of college. As students transition from home, they have to find a way to create their own “home away from home.” It may seem difficult at first, but luckily we have a few quick crafts and décor tips to make you feel comfortable in your new place.

Sleep is one of the most important things for a college student. It's obvious that new comfy bedding is an essential. Say goodbye to the bed at home that has been broken in for years and hello to a new flat mattress. A mattress protector will surely add the comfort you're seeking from your new home. Those lonely nights however can be difficult to adjust to. Having several pillows on the bed not only makes your bed more desirable but it also makes your bed look fuller. Whether it's a twin or queen, a bed with tons of pillows will appear to be the dwelling of a princess. With the struggles of college, a girl definitely needs her beauty sleep.

Decorations can be pretty expensive these days. It isn’t ideal to spend hundreds of dollars on
décor when we have Pinterest! There are tons of ideas for crafts and even a page for home décor.
You can easily paint a canvas with a quote, picture, or design on it. If you live in a dorm or even
an apartment painting a wall isn’t an option. In order to add color to your wall use the colors
of your bedding on a canvas, or pick an accent color to coordinate with other decorations you
already have.

TSTV Reporter Mariel Salcedo Discusses College and Celebrities

4/27/2012

While many girls dream of standing inches away from entertainers such as Channing Tatum, Gabrielle Union or Kina Grannis, for sophomore Mariel Salcedo it’s reality. Plainview, Texas native Mariel Salcedo studies radio-television-film, specifically the production track, and is also working toward a Business Foundations certificate at UT. Salcedo works with “Sneak Peek,” an entertainment news show through Texas Student Television. People can say how lucky she is to get an opportunity like this, but for Mariel it is only the product of hard work and dedication.

When Salcedo first became interested in the radio-television-film program at UT, a friend of hers mentioned the show and convinced her to attend the general meeting for Texas Student Television. Immediately she was infatuated in the industry and yearned to become more involved. With the opportunity to work with “Sneak Peek,” Mariel’s love of production began to grow and ultimately helped her decide what she wanted in a career. She described the experience of interviewing well known people as “awesome” and said that it’s great to see that these celebrities “are really down-to-earth and fun to talk to.” So far, Mariel’s favorite interview was a recent one with Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the directors of “21 Jump Street.” She explained that not only were they really great to engage in a conversation, but they gave helpful advice for aspiring film students, too.

Study with Color

4/11/2012

Even though the school year is coming to an end, there is still time to liven up your room. With finals creeping up, it’s hard to concentrate on anything, especially when your walls are looking drab. For example, my friend has this colorful wall (photographed above). The best way to liven up a room is to put some color on those walls. It can be pictures of friends, posters or ads ripped out from a magazine. All of these decorations can easily be taken down when necessary, but they will add some color to the once-gray, beaten-down walls.
Test time can be exhausting. Having to study constantly and have your head buried in books isn’t exactly the way we want to spend our weekends. Sometimes we need a little encouragement in order to motivate ourselves. A picture of some nice eye candy (wink!) is a great example of what to look at while studying for chemistry. Perhaps a cute outfit to look forward to buying once all your studying is out of the way will give you the push that you need.
Encouraging quotes are always necessary during these situations. During tests, it’s likely that you will feel down on yourself, so motivation is really useful. For example, the wall I took a picture of is filled with quotes from magazines. Their topics range from being a believer to making mistakes.
Sometimes it’s easy to get carried away with work, and it’s hard to plan time for fun. Filling your walls with the kind of fun you can expect after school is over will inspire you to do your best!

Peeta? Like the Bread? A Guide to the Hunger Games

3/26/2012

There’s something about when a book gets turned into a movie that makes people everywhere become crazy. You get all giddy inside, reread the books so that you are on top of your game, and tell everyone how you knew about the book before you ever set eyes on the trailer. Well, that is, unless you haven’t read the books and have no clue what it’s about. The Hunger Games movie came out this last weekend on the 22nd, and it already looks to be another movie saga that’s going to rank in lots of cash. Hardcore fans made costumes, bought their midnight premiere tickets, and tweeted about it non-stop. Others might have just borrowed the books from a friend and can’t really find time to actually pick it up. That’s where this guide comes in (without spoiling any of it)! For those of you planning to see the movie before reading the books, you might need a little background about who, when, where, and what exactly is a hunger game. I interviewed two big Hunger Games fans for answers.

So what exactly is a hunger game?
“The hunger games are basically the Capitol of Panem’s way of reminding the districts not to rebel,” psychology junior Rhema Anazonwu said. There are 12 districts of the country of Panem (thought to be North America), she said, and a boy and girl from each one must enter the competition and fight to the death with only one surviving out of the twenty four.

Who is the main character?
“Katniss,” said philosophy sophomore Alaina Cox. “She is a citizen of District 12.”

Soaking in the Sun

2/27/2012

As the sun begins to shine and the temperature begins to rise near the 70s it’s time for some fun in the sun. With the rain, snow flurries and overcast conditions, Austin has been a dreary looking place for a few weeks. It’s time to break out the shorts, shades, and neon tees. Spring break is in a couple of weeks and every Longhorn is set and ready to go. But it’s never too late to stop, relax, and enjoy the great weather. Don’t hold in all your excitement for the break, instead go ahead and get out! No I don’t mean going down to 6th or a frat party around the corner. I mean relaxing outside after a long day of class. For example, the turtle pond near the FAC is a great place to just sit, jam out with some tunes and soak in some sun. Another good way to refresh is to have lunch in front of the tower.  A jog on Town Lake, the Capitol grounds, or Zilker Park are even better ways to get a taste of spring. Even a dinner on your patio will set you at ease. After all, a lot of us probably have a test or an essay due right before we leave for break. A little relaxation will be very helpful to get you physically and mentally ready for the late nights you’ll be having come March 9.

2/10/2012

Well girls, it’s about that time again. Prepare yourselves for the constant PDA, boxes of chocolates, and giant teddy bears. Valentine’s Day love is in the air. The only holiday dedicated to showing just how much you care about your loved one. Or the only holiday that gives you a chance to escape.

SAY WHAT?!

UT's Very Own Chocolate Factory

1/23/2012

Do you remember the second that Charlie and Grandpa Joe stepped into the wonderful and exciting factory that was Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory? Well that is exactly what you’re going to feel when you step into the new candy store Campus Candy Yogurt Bar on The Drag. It has every candy you could possibly imagine lining the walls. From chocolate covered gummy bears to every sour animal you can think of, this place has got it all! It that wasn’t enough you will be in awe by the various yogurt flavors available. Not only that, but you can use any candy throughout the store to top that yogurt. If you’re too regular for that there is also a great choice of normal topping on the topping bar located in the middle of the store. With bright colors, great music, and an exciting environment, you will feel like a kid in a candy store--literally. This amazing experience doesn’t require any golden tickets. Check out their website here: http://www.campuscandy.com/.

Volunteering Before the Holidays

11/29/2011

Thanksgiving came extremely fast this year. Before heading back home for the holidays some friends and I decided to do some last minute volunteering. The last few weeks of the semester will be filled with finals and are going to be hard to have fun around. For a few weeks now, my friend and I have managed to stop by at Austin Pets Alive for some friendly dog walking and playtime with kittens. I never had a pet when I was a child, and helping out with ones who don’t have homes is rewarding (not to mention it makes up for my childhood). Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for everything we have but even more importantly giving back to those who aren’t as fortunate. There are many ways to give a helping hand such as volunteering at homeless shelters, donating to organizations, or volunteering with animals like we did. It’s really easy to get involved by simply checking out the web page www.austinpetsalive.org . If you aren’t a cat person it’s okay, the dogs are just as adorable and full of energy.  Looking at the sweet little animals can really make a difference in your day. Sometimes we don’t realize how quickly life is passing us by and we hardly stop to look at the little things.  A few moments with this little fur ball brightened my day immediately. With the stressful weeks ahead of us I am really glad I got the chance to do something so relaxing, helpful, and yet fun. Maybe animals aren’t your thing, but there are so many ways to give back to the community while taking a break from your busy college student life.

A View Like No Other

11/10/2011

Looking outside at this beautiful campus on a bright and sunny day I can’t help but wonder:  Why is it so darn cold outside? I may have only gone to one class but I sure did shiver the entire way there.   Just as always I will get warmer throughout the day, but this morning is not bearable without a jacket. It looks so gorgeous from inside my room but I guess looks really are deceiving. One of the reasons I love this darling city of Austin is because of the bright sun and warm days that allow my closet to be filled with summer dresses. Now I have to go out and start shopping for sweaters before it’s too late. Don’t get me wrong, it is way colder in my hometown and I managed to live there for eighteen years, but I just hate the cold. As the tower shines in the sunlight I can’t help think about the many students braving the wind to get to class. While the sky remains a nice blue tint, I am positive several students have ears that are red. In all seriousness it could be worse and I should be grateful to live in such a beautiful city. I am lucky enough to see our campus from an outstanding view. Then again, my hatred for the cold still remains as passionate as ever.
