Globalizing Palestine: Nobel Peace Prize Jeff Halper at UC Berkeley

4/8/2013

Dr. Jeff Halper is the co-founder of the Israeli Committee against House Demolitions, an anthropology professor, life long peace and justice activist and a Nobel Prize nominee. Come out to Wheeler Hall this Thursday for his talk on globalizing Palestine, which relates to the following:

Israel, a middle-range country that has managed to insert itself strategically into the world’s military-industrial complex, provides a useful entry point into the workings of global pacification. Its ongoing attempt to impose an exclusivist and militaristic ethnocracy over Palestine, together with the need to foster diplomatic support for its policies of occupation, lies at the core of its security politics. Locked it into permanent counterinsurgency – war against the Palestinian people – Israel has gained tactics and weaponry that hegemons the world over find effective in their own wars amongst the people.

Make sure to also come through to the reception following the speaking event, from 7-8 in 330 Wheeler Hall!

Cal Spirit Reigns During Annual Big Game Week

10/22/2012

Saturday, Oct. 21 marked Cal’s annual football match against Stanford University. In addition to the game’s relatively unusual timing—a departure from a more traditional November date—this year’s Big Game Rally saw a change of venue from the Greek Theatre to Edwards Stadium, as well as a consequent absence of the evening’s customary bonfire.

Members of the event’s planning committee compensated for the loss, however, by featuring a series of fire-blasting machines and a finale of blue and gold fireworks. Appearances by guest speakers such as members of the legendary play against Stanford in 1982 provided a larger and entertaining context for the impending game, and performances by student groups like the Golden Overtones and the UC Men’s Octet sustained a high volume of student energy.

Such spirit carried over into the noon commencement of the match, where the blue and gold-clad student section led the mass of Berkeley fans in Memorial Stadium in cheering for the resident team. Though a series of errors and fumbled mistakes on the part of the Golden Bears largely prevented them from taking back the axe—resulting in a score of 3-21—the vivacity of the various stadium-wide chants, the crowd-pleasing appearance by Cal Band, and the overall shared spirit and pride in the school provided a thoroughly enjoyable game day, succeeding in the end where our team, perhaps, did not.

But there’s always next year.

UNIQLO Grand Opening - San Francisco

10/8/2012

UNIQLO, a globally renowned Japanese clothing brand, officially opened its doors in San Francisco on Friday, Oct. 5. The company, which traces its history back to Yamaguchi in the mid-20th century, prides itself on basic, high-quality garments that are both “stylish and hyperpractical,” both “innovative and fun.”

In honor of the unveiling of its fifth U.S. store, UNIQLO offered a variety of discounts only eligible for opening weekend. Sales included $10 pairs of multicolored, Japanese denim jeans; as well as $15 Oxford shirts and $50 cashmere sweaters. Basic V-neck t-shirts and UNIQLO’s much-promoted, ultra-light down jackets were also available.

With such prices, the store naturally attracted a vast multitude of visitors from around Union Square, rendering necessary the formation of a security-guarded line outside the main entrance. Access to the store interior revealed three stories of even more eager shoppers, interspersed in perpetually shifting crowds among the shelves and racks of rainbow-colored merchandise.

Judging from the heft and sheer number of bags of exiting shoppers—and the contentment of an undying bargain-hunter in the form of yours truly—UNIQLO’s opening weekend was well worth the wait.

Top 10 Trends from NY Fashion Week

9/17/2012

It was that time of year again. The gathering of the fashion elite, the collective anticipation of the curtain reveal. New York’s biannual fashion week saw the unveiling of styles both new and familiar for this upcoming season, but for those of you who haven’t had the chance to scour the spring lines, we’ve collected some of the runways’ most prominent trends.

1. Geometric Prints / 2. Black and White

Prints dominated the runways at New York’s fashion week, taking shape in various takes on solid lines and geometric form. Patterns were particularly prominent in monochromatic shades, appearing in collections for Alice + Olivia (right), Jonathan Saunders, Ohne Titel (left), and Marc Jacobs.

3. Color Blocking

Bright, solid hues took an especially strong turn on the Diane von Furstenberg spring runway, where vivid blues and fresh reds imbued simple silhouettes with a vibrancy natural to the given season. Take a cue from the collections by pairing basic staples in unexpected colors for a doable shift in your everyday style.

4. Collars

The Week’s Top 5 Craziest Stories

9/3/2012

From the politically amusing to the pop culturally serious, here are five of this week’s breaking news pieces that you might have missed.

1. Clint Eastwood at the Republican National Convention

In case you weren’t aware, Barack Obama has the superpower of invisibility. At least according to Clint Eastwood’s presentation on Aug. 30 at the Republican National Convention, where he turned toward an empty chair and addressed the absent president with lengthy remarks spanning topics both irrelevant and otherwise, even admonishing The President Who Wasn’t There with a sassy “I’m not going to shut up, it’s my turn.” But it’s okay because Eastwood totally saved it at the end by yelling “We own this country!”, sending the nearly all-white, over-forty crowd into tender, fangirly sobs.

2. Jersey Shore Cancelled After Six Seasons

Alas, the rise and fall of the GTL empire. MTV has confirmed this season’s run as the last for the network’s charmingly notorious, kind-of-Italian bar-hopping crew. Fist-pump through the tears during the Sept. 6 special Gym, Tan, Look Back, which features riveting cast interviews and a sneak peak at season six, and then catch the final season premiere airing Oct. 4.

Sadia Saifuddin

4/9/2012

Name: Sadia Saifuddin
Major: Social Welfare
Year: Second Year
Hometown: Stockton, CA
Running for: ASUC Senate
Party: Independent

Bio: I was born and raised in Fremont, CA but my family moved to Stockton a few years back. I'm a health junkie, so I eat healthy (yay Soup Company salads!) and I hit the gym everyday. There's a long list of health issues in my family history and I want to do my part to treat my body like a temple. It's also really wonderful stress relief!
I have been involved with student government since 7th grade and I was involved with Speech and Debate in high school as well. I plan on going into law and working as a criminal prosecutor for the District Attorney's Office for the State of California. I want to specialize in cases of domestic violence and child abuse, which is a big reason that I'm a Social Welfare major.
