What to Watch: When Finals Got You Down

5/4/2012

It’s official, finals melancholy has settled in. Tisch is bumping, coffee is on a refill-drink-repeat cycle, and there’s only so much your brain can take in. So, take a break with some lighthearted fare!

10 Things I Hate About You (FDV4823)
90s rom com tween comedy at its best. It’s an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night so you know the story has got chops. Plus there’s Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and the wonderfully awkward Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The Hangover (FDV9505)

Four friends and their “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” mantra spells trouble. Raunchy and ridiculous.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (FDV7960)
Jason Segal, Mila Kunis, and Russell Brand star in this Judd Apatow comedy. It has a lot of heart and you really feel for Segal as the story progresses. Can he really forget Sarah Marshall? Let’s hope so.

Zoolander (FDV1492)

What to Watch: When You Want to Be a Kid Again

4/25/2012

Tuftonia’s Day is this Friday at 6 PM on Fletcher Field! Rejoice in the near-end of classes whilst you frolic outside, eat cotton candy, ride the mechanical bull, or take a spin on that awesome swing ride. End the night watching fireworks and a childhood movie, a perfect end to a nostalgic day.

Spirited Away (FDV1232) [On Reserve]
Any of Miyazaki’s flicks are pretty adorable and entertaining. Even though this one is only available for a four-hour check out, it’s worth the extra effort. The hand drawn animation is incredible, which is a good break from all the CGI we get nowadays.

Toy Story 3 (FDV10144)
Who doesn't love Buzz Lightyear and Woody? This wrap-up to Pixar’s series is heartbreaking at moments, but as always, also funny in true Pixar style. Check out the first two, also in Tisch, and many more Pixar flicks to your hearts desire.

The Tufts LGBT Center

4/24/2012

Tom Bourdon, the Director of the LGBT Center, is warm, enthusiastic, and personable. Currently wrapping up Gaypril, the annual pride month celebration, Bourdon was quick to invite me to a talk, and their calendar is full of informative and exciting events. The Lavender Graduation Ceremony on May 1st will end the year by honoring Gunner Scott, the head of the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition. In fact, Carl Sciortino, Tufts album of 2000, and state representative helped pass the Massachusetts Transgender Equality Bill along with Scott. The event will be held on Tuesday May 1st at 4:30 PM in SOGO. Part of the Group of Six Cultural Centers, the LGBT Center is on the second floor of 226 College Avenue.

What to Watch: When You Want a Leo Fix

4/18/2012

This past Sunday (April 15th) was the 100-year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. To commemorate this historical event, Paramount Pictures has re-released a limited edition of Titanic in 3-D. I think every girl in my generation was a bit obsessed with this movie and probably still enjoys it.  As a child, I got my own Heart of the Ocean necklace for $20 and blasted Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” for months on end. Most of all, I quickly fell in love with Jack Dawson and subsequently, Leonardo DiCaprio. So, get out to the theatre to check out Titanic 3-D (It’s playing at AMC Loews Harvard Square!) or rent a couple movies to get nostalgic for our childhood crush.

What to Watch: When You're Sad Spring Hasn't Sprung

4/9/2012

The Media Center on the third floor of Tisch Library has a library of over 10,000 movies! Check out some of these films to get that Spring Break feeling back, even if it's cold and raining on the hill.

1) My Neighbor Totoro (FDV3443)
Connect with your inner flower child in Hayao Miyazaki’s classic animated film. Totoro, a mythical creature, is absolutely adorable plus he can make plants grow with his magical powers. Pretty neat.

2) Alice in Wonderland (FDV9500)
Tim Burton’s female empowerment version of Alice is a feast for the eyes. Colorful and wonky, the plot might not be totally innovative, but the computer animation shows unique images. It makes for a definitely springy, breezy ride.

3) The Rum Diary (FDV12269)
Johnny Depp brings a charming performance to the film, which is based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel of the same name. The setting is picturesque in glorious shots of ocean, forests, and beach that brighten up your screen and mood. Meanwhile, Amber Heard’s brightly colored outfits and flouncy dresses are to die for. Fun fact: Thompson also wrote Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which Depp starred in during the ‘90s.

The Tufts International Center

3/26/2012

On 20 Sawyer Avenue, next to Alpha Phi and across from the International House, lies the International Center. The director, Jane Etish-Andrews, is a busy woman and often rushes between meeting after meeting. However, she is always warm and engaged when she talks to students. Her office is filled with beautiful knick-knacks from around the world, and her passion for the International Center is perceptible.

LCS Blood Drive

1/24/2012

The holiday season is over and with it, a lot of community service centered around the holidays is fading, too. But, good news! There is an upcoming opportunity to give back on Tufts campus, which can make you feel all sorts of good. And best of all, you can do a lot of good, too.

Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood, and five million people receive blood every year. In effect, millions of people have their lives saved through the donation process by 9.5 million blood donors. The community blood supply for types O positive and A positive are at emergency level, while the supply for O negative and A negative are at a critical level. Therefore, it is incredibly important to donate blood at this crucial time.

The Leonard Carmichael Society is running a blood drive from January 30th to February 3rd in the Carmichael Lounge. Each day the drive will be open from 12 pm to 6 pm, except February 3rd, where it will be open from 11 am to 4 pm.  Please come to the lounge with a positive ID. You walk in or sign up on tuftslife.com.

In our last week of Campus Class-Acts, another nominated professor! For this interview, I had the pleasure of meeting Professor Cruz, who was immediately friendly and cheery.
