Hello, Gorgeous! Spring Break Beauty

3/14/2012

At last! Your spring semester is half way over and your hard work will soon be rewarded with a well-deserved break. On your travels you’re likely to encounter some vacation conundrums that every collegiette must learn to handle! Here are some tips that may seem bizarre, but might just save you from a destination disaster.

Sunburns

Whether your vacation includes sun or snow it’s not out of the question that you will be receiving the dreaded sunburn. The pain of a burn can be unbearable and effectively ruin your trip.

For the Pain
There is a mystical remedy for sunburn pain that may shock you, but it absolutely works. Take a clean cloth and soak it in a half vinegar half water solution. Wring the solution out of the towel and use it as a compress on the burnt area.  It might smell a bit, but it’s nothing a cool shower can’t cure. You wont believe the relief!

For the Redness
How do you feel about mustard? Love it or hate it, if you have a burn, a little bit of French’s will be your new BFF. Take a little mustard into the shower with you and rub it over the burned areas. Again, you will smell like mustard until you rinse off. However, after your shower, I promise you won’t smell like a Fenway Frank. Once you’re finished you will notice a significant difference in the redness.

Hello Gorgeous: Spring Forward

3/2/2012

Although it might seem difficult to believe with the recent weather development, spring is almost here and with it comes a new slew of fresh trends. So, despite the snow on the ground it’s time to begin preparations for a new season and perhaps a new look!

Hair
It’s time for a new cut and if you’re brave a new shade. The look this spring is statement hair. I’m sure you’ve seen the zany colors across campus already and perhaps you think it’s not something you can pull off. Well now is the best time to experiment! You’re in college! If you’re wary of drastic change try a peach tone, or a pale lavender 1 in. thick strip of hair rather than dying your whole head.

Hello, Gorgeous: Feverishly Fabulous!

2/24/2012

Tis’ the season for sore throats and runny noses, everyone’s favorite time of the year to be sure. Kidding. Let’s agree that there is nothing fabulous about crumpled up tissues encircling your indented sofa. I have managed to catch some sort of plague and as UMass is a fairly large establishment I assume that a few of you share my plight. An issue that has emerged for me is how on earth do I pull myself out of bed, wade through discarded tissues and cold medications, and sort out the mess that is my face? Without further ado, here are a few beauty elixirs that can be achieved without a pharmaceutical frenzy.

Kicking the Cancer Sticks

2/10/2012

There’s one question that I think everyone has to ask themselves at least once. If you could go back and change a decision, or a comment, or a reaction, would you? I for one would go back to the night I decided it would be cute to try a cigarette at a party. I went by the try everything once idea, however this sampling of nicotine turned into a three year relationship. Now, our love affair has reached its close and I thought our breakup might be important to share with those of you who are trying to kick the habit.

Now, I didn’t want to write this article until I passed the 3-day mark. They say after the third day you’re home free, so I’m in this for the long haul. Below, I’m going to give you a few tips for quitting along with the awesome benefits of finally kicking the habit.

Quitting smoking is not fun, but there are a couple of things that make it awesome within the first hour you put down the butts.

Within 20 minutes your blood pressure and heart rate and body temperature return to normal.

Within 12 hours the carbon monoxide levels in your soon to be healed bod will have dropped to normal.

Hello Gorgeous! Realistic Resolutions

2/3/2012

Now that resolution month has come and gone we can finally take the pressure off. Let’s face it, there’s nothing practical about dropping 20 pounds in a month or reading every single magazine that’s been piling up on your bedside table. Below are a few doable beauty resolutions that will keep you gorgeous all year long.

1. Drink more WATER! Try to cut out soda and sugary drinks as much as possible and make the switch to the beverage that does nothing but good. In fact, a glass of warm water with lemon in the morning will kick start your metabolism for the day!

2. Get 6-8 hours of sleep a night when possible. We’ve all been through all-nighters whether they were due to a test or a night out, but bedtime is your body’s time to recover and refresh.

Hello Gorgeous: Gifting Gorgeous

12/16/2011

As the holiday season is upon us, you may have started thinking about what you’re going to get friends and family on a collegiette’s budget. This year, you won’t let anyone down with these affordable stocking stuffers. Here are a few gorgeous gift ideas that keep on giving.

Beauty in Bulk
If you haven’t heard of Birchbox yet and your loved one covets sweet beauty samples, you are in for a treat. Birchbox is a box of amazing, high-end samples ranging from NARS to Kiehls to Kate Spade that comes to your door once a month for only $10 a month! This is a perfect gift for that girlfriend that seemingly has it all! Go online to www.birchbox.com, to get a 12, 6, or 3-month membership.

Merry Makeup
Sometimes it can be tough to buy makeup for someone whose idea of a makeup haul is getting new mascara at CVS. Coming from someone with a sister who has an aversion to dropping any dough on makeup, I know the challenges. These are actually the most fun people to shop for! She gets a name brand lip gloss and it’s like she’s never known the joys of a shellacked lip! So, if your nearest and dearest falls into this category, I would suggest a palette like Urban Decay’s Feminine Palette (Sephora, $18). This has 6 shades of girly eyeshadow hues that are perfect for every makeup neophyte, not to mention it includes primer and a black eye pencil!

Hello, Gorgeous: Post-Flight Fabulous

12/2/2011

With our six week holiday break right around the corner I’ve started thinking a lot about beauty conundrums that spring up while traveling. Every year before I fly home to Texas I ask my mother if there is anyone I need to look attractive for awaiting me when I de-plane. I blow up like a balloon when I fly, my lips chap, and my overall look is a little less than gorgeous. So, if like me you need to avoid frightening your welcoming committee, here’s a travel kit that will keep you fly.

First and foremost, make sure that your items are all TSA acceptable or you will lose them. Sadly, security doesn’t care how much you need your Evian spray. Drink a ton of water. You might have to wake up your snoring neighbor seven times to use the restroom. Doesn’t matter; drink up.

Pack a super emollient moisturizer. I like Benefit’s B. Right Total Moisture Facial Cream (Sephora; $38)

Cream blush is a must. It will last those three-hour flights so much better than a powder bush. My personal favorite is Stila’s Convertible Color in Petunia (Sephora; $25)

A good lip balm will never fail you, especially on a plane trip. Stay fresh with a balm like Smiths Rosebud Salve (UrbanOutfitters; $6). This stuff is amazing and one tin has lasted me almost two years.

Hello, Gorgeous! Winter Wonder What Happened To My Skin...

10/28/2011

It seems that our heat wave has come to a screeching halt and winter is upon us. As much as I’ve enjoyed the continuation of warm weather and my denim shorts, there is something just so darn delightful about the onset of winter. With this season comes hot chocolate, flannel and the warmth (and undeniably delicious smell) of a crackling fire. Unfortunately, the wonderland that will become UMass in the coming weeks will also bring its dear friend, winter skin.

This week, I’m going to give y’all a few tips so you can hold on to that dewy epidermis all season long.
