Opinion: Major Respect

2/19/2013

All opinions expressed in this article are solely those of the author. They do not reflect the views of Her Campus Chatham.

Today, I overheard two people talking about how much of a joke nursing is because it is one of those majors that is "the easy way to get through college," because it is “a female job,” and because you basically “don’t even need a nursing degree because all you do is start off as a nursing assistant and then work your way up."

First of all, may I just say to those people: God bless your hearts.

Let me just say that I am not a nursing student, and for a reason: I stink at anything science-related (unless it’s psychology) and have an extremely low amount of patience. I don’t have the drive or passion for the field to put in the amount of work that nursing students do to achieve their degree. Nursing is no joke, and I really, truly dare you to try to tell any medical professional otherwise. Nurses are the stitching that keeps a hospital or medical center together. They care for you personally, and our health care system would not be as far along as it is today without nurses (which, may I remind you, INCLUDES MEN who are completely capable of doing a nurse’s job just as women are capable of doing a surgeon’s job. This is 2013. Leave your gender stereotypes in the ‘60s, please.)

However, I’m not just here to talk about people making fun of nursing majors.

I’m beyond sick in general of people thinking that any major that doesn’t involve Pre-Law, Pre-Med, engineering, and the likes is a complete joke and that a person who is pursuing something otherwise is just dumb or only wants to party in college.

Things to Make You Feel Better About Being Single on Valentine's Day

2/14/2013

(All opinions expressed in this article are solely those of the author.)

Ah, Valentine’s Day. Quite frankly, I find it to be a bit of an over-hyped Hallmark holiday, but a lot of people take it really seriously. Valentine's Day, (which is also, coincidentally enough, National Condom Day...well planned, well planned), can sometimes throw people into a serious funk. I've seen it happen all too many times to some of my friends. Honestly, it’s only one day out of the year, and I’m almost positive that you’re really going to enjoy Valentine’s Day someday when you find somebody you love to share it with. But, until then, here’s a little list of things that should make you feel better about yourself by putting things into perspective for “Single’s Awareness Day” (and who knows, maybe even for your life in general).

1. You are not Honey Boo Boo.

2. ...Or Honey Boo Boo’s mom.

3. ...Or Honey Boo Boo’s mom’s boyfriend.  (Which leads me to point out.... ladies, we can all find love. It’s possible.)

4. You are not serving a 19-year prison sentence for stealing a loaf of bread, à la Jean Valjean. (I mean maybe I’m making assumptions, but considering you were able to get on a computer or phone to read this, I can only assume...)

5. You’re still alive and kickin’.

6. The apocalypse has not occurred....Yet.

7. You could still be wearing these.

8. Or these.

The Mr. Big Appeal

12/8/2012

Alert: This article may contain spoilers for those who haven't seen the full Sex and the City series!

Being in college, and being girls, I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that a rather large majority of us have seen at least one episode of Sex and the City, or at least have seen one of the movies based on the TV series. A major plotline that runs throughout the show is the…errr… complicated relationship between Mr. Big and our leading girl Carrie. It’s funny; Carrie normally comes off as such a smart woman. Obviously, a part of the reason why SATC remains so popular today is that it’s relatable to women and our struggles to find love and success, and to balance the two once we have found both. Yet…when I first started watching the show, I couldn’t understand why in the heck Carrie kept going back to Mr. Big. Especially after the second time he hurt her. ESPECIALLY after Aidan, who clearly was a perfect fit for her, who wanted nothing but to give her the world. I posed this question to my 15-year-old self constantly (well, that, and why Samantha was so freaking obsessed with having sex all the time…I was young. And naïve). Yet, the older I’ve become, and the more experience I’ve had with dating, the more I begin to understand Carrie and her reasoning for doing so.

Warm and Stylish Shoe Styles YOU Should Try This Winter!

12/4/2012

Ah, winter. Some of us harbor a deep love for those delicate snowflakes that fall from the sky, the beautiful white canvas nature paints after a fresh snowfall, and the opportunity to snuggle up inside by the fireplace with a cup of hot cocoa. Yet, many of us start feeling annoyed or even start hating winter after only a few days of it, and still others can only stand being so cold and it being gray outside for so long!  A huge dilemma that comes along with the wintry blues is how to stay stylish and warm at the same time. Sandals and most pairs of flats are out, but chunky and bulky snow boots that tend to be on the not-so-cute side are in. For those of us who want to look stylish while also not freezing our toes off, I’ve picked out a few winter season-friendly styles that are relatively affordable on a college girl’s budget (compared to other brands…keep in mind that a good pair of boots may be on the pricier side but are worth the investment!). Who knows, maybe a few of these pairs will make it on your Christmas/Hanukkah wish list ;)

Rock Your Relationship: Dating Tips from datemyschool and HC Chatham

11/9/2012

Here's the deal:

There are over 900 undergrads at Chatham.

Over 6,000 at CMU.

Over 18,000 at Pitt.

That's just counting our neighbors. Add the tens of thousands of students at all of Pittsburgh's universities, and the social scene starts to feel a little daunting.

Think of datemyschool as your ultimate wingwoman: an online dating site exclusively for college students and recent alumni. Whether you're looking for a fun fling, an engagement ring or anything in between, datemyschool safely and easily connects you to over 150,000 cuties.

Ready to go? We've teamed up with datemyschool to make you a love expert. Here, three HC Chatham writers share their top tips for rocking any relationship.

Alex Heathcock, Fashion Writer

1. Be your complete self. A guy/girl worth dating will find all of the supposedly “weird” and “quirky” qualities about you endearing. It’s cliché, but if he/she really cares, he’ll/she'll accept you for who you are completely.

2. Sometimes, opposites do attract. Just because somebody isn’t your “type” doesn’t mean that you should not consider them. Sometimes it’s the people who are the most different from us that we learn and grow from the most, and have the most interesting/best relationships with.

3. Don’t look for love. Let it come to you. When you usually obsessively search for it, that’s when things go wrong. When you’re ready for a relationship, the right guy will pop up at the right time. I promise.

The Chatham Woman's Guide to Malls Around Pittsburgh

9/12/2012

(All opinions expressed in this guide are solely those of the author.)

As we all know, the plus side to living in a city like Pittsburgh is the amazing shopping we have surrounding us. Unfortunately, unlike New York City, a lot of times we have to rely on public transportation or cars to get us to these fabulous shopping destinations. Isn’t it wonderful that we have the Chatham shopping shuttles and the Port Authority buses to get us everywhere? If you are new to the area, new to shopping in the area, or just want to read up on which malls are worth going to, then this is for you!

1) SouthSide Works

Located on none other than Pittsburgh’s South Side, SouthSide Works is a premier destination for a fun night out with the girls, a boyfriend/girlfriend, whoever! Unfortunately, Chatham does not offer a shuttle to SouthSide Works (boo!), but you can easily take the Oakland shuttle from Chatham and hop on the 75 PAT buses that will take you straight there. Outfitted with a nice movie theater (where they offer student discounts, and tickets tend to be cheaper than at the Waterfront), BCBG, H&M, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, Hofbrauhaus, McCormick & Schick’s, American Eagle, Aerie, and the Cheesecake Factory (my favorite!) the SouthSide Works is a fun place to stop by and get some side shopping done while going out to dinner or a movie. Might I add, the American Eagle Outfitters at SouthSide Works is extremely plush—understandably so, considering AE’s corporate headquarters is right down the street!

2) The Waterfront
