Pay It Forward Week

4/22/2012

In the words of Woody Hayes, “Pay It Forward!”

Next week, from April 23rd-April 27th, is Pay It Forward week and OSU is offering some amazing volunteer opportunities to go out and give back to the community!  Each day has a different theme and on April 23rd, it’s Pay It Forward Day to kick off the week’s festivities.  The opening ceremonies will be at 5:00 PM at the Wexner Center, but if you can’t make it, no problem!  There will be sandwich making for the homeless earlier that day.  Tuesday the 24th is Education Day when you will be able to volunteer with after school programs and write thank you notes to faculty members all day.  Hunger Day is Wednesday, April 25th, when the Mid-Ohio Foodbank will be putting on a poverty simulation.  Space for this event is limited, so be sure to RSVP!  April 26th is Health and Wellness Day when you will be able to volunteer with the Healthcare facilities and get a free yoga session in return!  Win-win situation, right?  To wrap up Pay It Forward week, Friday will hold a Service Fair in order to make sure we continue to pay it forward after next week’s events come to a close.

You can find out more about Pay It Forward week by visiting this website:

Tis’ the Season for Campaigning: USG elections

4/3/2012

Walking around campus recently, you’ve probably seen the crazy amount of chalking, people wearing the same T-shirts or have heard the word “vote” so many times that you want to scream. It’s all in the spirit of campaigning! Undergraduate Student Government (USG) is having elections for President, Vice President and Senate April 12 -13. With that less than two weeks away, people have been campaigning like mad to get their names out there!

Each presidential and vice presidential candidate have a slate of people running for different senator positions behind them. Positions include Off-Campus Senator, North Campus Senator, Education Senator, Exploration Senator, etc.

The four slates this year are:

Kyle Strickland and Nick Parker - www.voteKYLEandNICK.com Taylor Stepp and Kevin Arndt - www.votetaylorandkevin.com Travis Skaggs and Danielle Meyer - votetravisanddanielle.com Niraj Antani and Nikki Brown - nirajandnikki.com

There are a few misconceptions about elections, however. Students are allowed to vote for candidates on different slates. Also, for some positions there are multiple senate seats, therefore multiple candidates running.

Be sure to check out the pages for the slates, stop by the booths on the Oval and read everyone’s policies. You do have a chance to make a difference!

Happy voting!

Leslie Wexner: The Coolest Man on Campus

3/27/2012

Leslie H. Wexner- you may know him from his amazing contributions to none other than The Ohio State University, from our very own Wexner Center or you may even know him as the owner of Victoria’s Secret.  Crazy, I know.  But Mr. Wexner has become quite a celebrity on campus lately after the university changed the name of the Medical Center to Wexner Medical Center in honor of his donations to the school.

But let’s peek into Mr. Wexner’s life before and after becoming one of OSU’s most famous alumnus!

Wexner was born in Dayton, Ohio in September 1937 to two immigrant parents.  He attended The Ohio State University (obvi!) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.  He was also a frat bro from Sigma Alpha Mu!  After he graduated, he took matters into his own hands and opened up a store called “The Limited”.  With his success from that one store, he added on sister business that are some of the most popular stores for us girls such as Victoria’s Secret, Bath and Body Works and The White Barn Candle Company!

At Ohio State, he is known by all students, faculty, and alumni of his funding for the Wexner Center for the Arts, home of many art exhibitions, performances and other programs for the university and the public.  The Wexner Center for the Arts is named after his father, Harry L. Wexner.  He has most recently been recognized for his $100 billion donation for the Medical Center, The James and Solove Institute.

A year later, Ohio State has named the Medical Center after him  (now known as the Wexner Medical Center) for all he has done for OSU.  There are even some jokes that the entire university will soon be named after him!

Beer & Wine? Skydiving? Witchcraft? Wacky OSU Classes That Make School Fun

2/26/2012

The last few weeks of winter quarter at Ohio State doesn’t just mean that spring break is right around the corner, but spring quarter scheduling is too!  Most upperclassmen, athletes, and honors students have probably already scheduled, but for some freshmen, we are still stressing out over schedules!  For those of us that are scrambling to find some fun GECs or even some two credit hour classes to boost our GPAs, don’t panic!  I have done some BuckeyeLink research  and pulled some classes that might interest us all!

Dance
The Ohio State Dance Department offers a ton of classes at many different levels that all vary from around one to three credits!  If you’re a beginner, they offer Dance 201.01, .02, .03, etc, which include ballet, modern, jazz, and hip-hop.  If you’re more of an advanced dancer, they offer these same classes at the 601.xx level.  They are offering a class this quarter on Saturdays from 10:00am-12:00-pm (Dance 601.08: Other), which is circus dancing and tricks!  You learn how to master the hula-hoop, basic tumbling and other crazy things you wouldn’t find in most dance classes.  They are great, entertaining GPA boosters!

Under the weather and alone? Get over your sickness on your own

2/2/2012

It happens to all of us during the wintertime—sniffling during class, getting drowsy, and, soon enough, we’re cuddling in our beds with six blankets, craving chicken noodle soup and asking for our mothers.  But, if you’re one of those unfortunate out-of-state students (like myself), you can’t have your mother by your side.  So, what do you do?

Take care of yourself!  It sounds awful, but I know we can get through it.  I’ve come up with some pointers that have helped me survive the cold I’m suffering through right now.

Pinterest: The Most Unpopular Popular Craze

1/26/2012

These days, many people are addicted to the almighty, renowned social networking sites Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.  Makes you wonder: how could another site like this become popular?  Pinterest is the answer to that question!  But what is Pinterest?  Another fabulous question.

Pinterest is like a virtual corkboard where you can search your interests, hobbies, videos, and even pictures of babies in rompers.  Thousands of pictures have been uploaded by other users for you to peruse.  When you find something you like, you “pin it” (get it? Pinterest!) to the board that you have created.  It may sound silly, but it’s much more addictive than you think.

You can create as many boards as you wish, with different themes like “Weddings,” “Apparel,” “DIY,” and, my absolute favorite, “Humor.”  There are endless amounts of photos and videos that you can pin to any of your boards.

But wait, this is silly if I’m the only one that can see what I’m pinning.

FALSE!  Pinterest works a little bit like Twitter where other people can follow your boards if you’re friends with them on Facebook.  You can link your Pinterest account to your Facebook account and you’ll automatically start following others—and vice versa!  This way, you can see what your friends are pinning and “like” their pins or “repin” them yourself.  However, in order to get a Pinterest account, you have to request an invitation from the website; an invite should come via email about three days later.  If you already have a friend with an account, though, they can send you an invitation and you’ll become part of the club just like that!  So awesome.

Year: Freshman

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Hometown: Auburn, OH

Relationship Status: Single

HC: What is the biggest turn on/off in a girl?
WK: Turn off: Stuck up girls that aren’t nice to everyone they meet; girls that aren’t inclusive. Turn on: Being confident with who you are.  When girls accept who they are and are happy, it’s a beautiful thing.

HC: If you could meet any person dead or alive, who would it be?
WK: Carl Sagan; he is an astrophysicist, an author, and a pretty cool dude.  He makes science cool.  I would say Bill Nye but I already met him.  He danced with my baby brother at my uncle’s wedding.

HC: What is your ideal date?
WK: I’d pick my date up at her place, we’d skip the highway, and drive to the city through the suburbs and look at the Christmas lights on all of the houses.  We’d then go to the small family-owned Italian restaurant in Little Italy and share a pizza.  Then we’d go to the Italian bakery next door, pick up some stuff and drive home.  Then ... I’d give her the option of any Will Ferrell movie.

HC: What is your biggest pet peeve?
WK: When people don’t speak with conviction.

HC: Do you have a celebrity doppleganger?
WK: People say I look like Clark Kent from Superman.

HC: What is your favorite OSU memory so far?

Five Tips to Solve All Your Winter Fashion Woes

1/20/2012

As 30-degree weather makes its way into Ohio, it is inevitable to want to throw on a pair of sweatpants and a down coat, slip on the uggs, and mentally prepare yourself for the grueling walk to class in the morning.  The cold weather has definitely taken its toll on all of us and our sense of fashion.  I can speak for most girls when I say that during this time of the year, warmth and comfort are more important than impressing the cutie in my Psych Lecture.

But even though it’s easy to throw on your “winter (AKA boring) wardrobe,” it’s also just as easy to spruce your outfits up with small changes and additions!  Below I have five tips for how to make your outfit stand out and be super stylish while still maintaining the warmth/comfort you need to get through the walk to class.

1.  Spruce up your coats with a bright printed scarf!
Nothing says “look at me!” more than a bright pink scarf with a super fun pattern.  Most winter coats are darker, plainer colors such as black and gray, so accessorizing them with patterned scarves that compliment the coats is a great way to add some color and style to your outfit!

You can save your money and still get a quality, warm scarf in stores such as Forever21 ($5.90-$14.80), department stores such as Macy’s (Madonna’s Material Girl collection is my favorite!), H&M ($6.95-$17.95), and even stores like Target!

2.  Every girl loves a cute bootie!
Of course Ugg boots are the warmest, easiest option and they are seen on many girls all over campus.  But lately, boots of all kinds have been becoming quite popular with collegiettes™ everywhere.
