10 Unhealthy Habits To Leave At School For The Summer!

5/16/2013

Sunny days and warm weather are just around the corner. Summer is a great time to start fresh and re-dedicate ourselves to a healthy lifestyle. If you’ve strayed a bit in the stress of finals and exams, let Her Campus help you get back on track. As you finish classes and pack up to move out, think about leaving these bad habits behind as well.

1. The Problem: Late night snacking

Whether you’re out at the bars or hitting the books, as the night goes on, you can get pretty hungry. Takeout menus on your fridge may be calling your name and you’re helpless to resist the temptation of that bag of pretzels in the pantry.

“Late night snacking is the worst,” says HC contributing writer Jessica Salerno, “especially when you've had a long and stressful day and the dining hall just isn’t cutting it.”

These late night snacks usually lead to an unhealthy binge and can also affect the way you sleep. According to Dr. Jackie Keller, founder of NutriFit, eating heavy or rich foods before you hit the bed can make you feel uncomfortable and make it difficult to get adequate rest.

The Solution:
The best defense against an empty stomach at night actually starts in the morning. Keller says studies have shown people who eat a good breakfast and continue to practice good habits throughout the day are less hungry and have better eating habits overall.

“If you eat well during the course of the day, then that unfed feeling that results in eating late at night goes away,” says Keller. “When 9:00 comes around, you’re done with food.”

Eating a fiber-rich dinner will help keep your stomach full until bedtime. Keller recommends preparing meals with foods like beans, potatoes, brown rice, or yams.

Today we say congratulations to some amazing seniors who have been our past Campus Cuties. No doubt, they've led exciting and accomplished lives here at Miami and they deserve one final send off from Her Campus. Read on to see what their post-grad plans are and to hear some words of wisdom from these awesome (and attractive) seniors!

Featured in: November '12 Post-grad Plans: Working at Nielsen as a Professional Services Analyst in Cincinnati, OH Advice for Underclassmen: "One thing I didn't fully grasp as a freshman is how much better college goes if you sit down and focus early in the day. The schoolwork can feel overwhelming as a freshman, but if you focus and work efficiently, you can easily be done with work at a reasonable time. Doing so lets you have a lot more fun uptown and with friends.  There's too much going on at Miami to spend time procrastinating on Facebook."

The Night Owls of Oxford and Where to Find Them

3/23/2013

Post midnight in Oxford is a strange and awesome time, especially on the weekends. It's no secret that many college kids forego wayyyyyy too much sleep and are uncommonly active until the wee hours of the morning. The night owls of Oxford are a rare and wonderful breed and if you happen to be awake and around town in their peak hours, these are the types you might encounter.

12:15 A.M. - The Brick Street Benders

Now that Stadium is closed down, nearly all of the bumpers and grinders have made their moves to the Brick Street dance floor. This crowd knows the perfect time to show up before the lines get too long, some flashing their VIP cards to by-pass the usually tight security. There are the guys creepily holding up the wall around the dance floor and the shameless students flaunting their moves front and center. You might know a few of the local celebs who have been featured on the Miami Makeout twitter account who proudly claim membership to this group of night owls. If you're looking for to fit in with this fun and wild group, get out on the middle  of the dance floor and get down and dirty with the best of 'em.
