Blatant Favoritism
At my internship this summer, there are only two interns in our department. Our supervisor blatantly favors me over the other intern, and always asks me to do the more important projects and kind of ignores the other one. I think we are equal in talent and I am not really sure what I did to deserve such preferential treatment, but its starting to get really awkward with the other intern and I can tell she resents me. What should I do?

In the ideal working world, everyone is recognized for their hard work. Unfortunately it rarely plays out that way- that’s why when you find a good manager, be grateful! My advice is simple: be the best employee and the best colleague you can be, at the same time. Focus on your professional growth and your work but at the same time be a sensitive and supportive colleague should she look to you for advice. Also, keep in mind that there may be underlying issues you are not aware of that have caused this favor imbalance. Be proud of the recognition you are receiving but without being arrogant in the process. Balancing both roles of worker and friend is a delicate one, but knowing how to master it will really be an asset to you in the future. Good luck!
About the Author
Biography
For more than a decade, Sara Bordo has mentored nearly one hundred women at various stages of their careers. Her belief, that women should champion other women in their careers, has guided her efforts to
help young women in growing both professionally and personally. In Spring 2010, she founded Women Rising, a consultancy that reinforces the principle that other women’s successes help all women.
Women Rising’s efforts include a series of workshops that help young women begin and manage their professional careers. On a very practical level, the workshops provide insight from hiring managers, steps to
define and leverage each woman’s personal brand, and networking strategies for entering the workplace.
Upcoming activities for Women Rising include Ms. Bordo featured as a career and mentor expert on several young female lifestyle sites, continued public speaking and career mentoring. Also planned is a publication of successful female leaders’ stories telling the most alarming and inspiring tales of women working for women.
