How to Transition Your Favorite Summer Trends for Fall

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Kohl’s for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Her Campus partnered with Kohls.com to bring you some back to school style tips, and here’s my biggest one: I hate to break it to you, but doing a full closet transition every season – especially from warmer months to cooler months – is a scam! No one should need to say good bye to a piece she loves just because the temperature is getting colder. All it takes is a little creativity to make your favorite summer clothes work and stay relevant for fall. After all, A+ dressing in college is all about comfort and layering. One moment you’ll be sitting in a freezing lecture hall and the next you’ll be making the long climb to your 4th floor walk-up dorm room, trying not to break a sweat. You need items that will be comfortable in a warm situation but can also be layered with a sweater, cardigan, or other outerwear. I picked out an outfit from Kohl’s to show you how to easily transition some of your favorite summer trends and items and make them work for the fall semester.

Let’s get started with what’s probably a big category in your closet: your summer tops! One of my favorite trends this summer has been the lace-up top. There are a million variations of this style, but you can always count on a lace-up top to be playful, comfortable, and showing just the right amount of skin. I found this amazing Chaps top at Kohl’s that combines the lace-up trend with a timeless classic – the nautical stripe. I’d wear a top like this all summer with white jeans or shorts, and it would be a shame to have to put it away for fall.

An easy way to transition a summery piece like this is to swap your light-colored bottoms with something a little edgier and season appropriate for fall. Try black denim, a totally underrated basic! Here, I’ve paired the top with these super cool Rock & Republic distressed jeggings. The best thing about these jeggings? They came in so many different sizes and lengths, perfect for petites like me! I usually have to cuff or hem my denim, but Kohls.com carries a huge variety of sizes, especially once you consider Kohl’s Juniors Apparel Page. Check out their selection of Mudd, Candie’s and SO for enough options to make your head spin!

Another necessity for back to school: comfy but chic walking shoes that are versatile and fuss-free. Honestly, who has time for tying and untying shoelaces anymore? Not me, and definitely not you. I’ve recently been opting for slip-ons more and more because when you’re constantly on the go, you need to be able to get out the door fast. Anything else will slow you down, and #girlbosses like you don’t have time for that! The same Vans you wore all summer long are perfect for walking around on campus, too. Make sure to pick a design that is versatile, like this black and white geometric pattern that will go with literally everything.

Finally, don’t forget about accessorizing strategically to complete your fall look! Just like adding a statement necklace to a casual dress will instantly glam it up, you can mix in some distinctly fall accessories to tie together your summer-transitioned-to-fall look. Anything with the look of black leather will do the trick, and there’s probably no better item to invest in than a trendy and unique backpack. I’m obsessed with this Juicy Couture faux leather studded backpack which features an interior laptop pocket. So practical and so chic at the same time! My advice: put your huge tote away and opt for a cool girl backpack – plus, your shoulders will thank you!

You can shop Shop Kohl’s Back to School  to get my complete look, or find thousands of other amazing pieces on your own. Remember: you don’t have to start from scratch building your fall closet – just find a couple items you love from your closet and add a few smart pieces to transition your favorites from summer to fall effortlessly! Happy shopping, and go make all of your #BigPlans for fall come true!
